Plastic Bags on Head
Save Dishes on Hand

Project Home Works Service Story
“On windy days, the paint chips will fall. I need a plastic bag to cover my head,” said Grandma Chan, who lives with her husband in Tsui Ping Estate. The couple used to gear up every day to cook meals because loose paint chips on the ceiling would fall. Grandma even put a plastic bag over her head. Our volunteers repaired the ceiling last month. Grandpa Chan expressed his gratitude in his thank-you letter, “We are touched that problem gets solved!”

Model Jocelyn Luko and her husband Anthony Sandstrom repaired ceiling for Grandma Fok on 6 August. The couple are happy to bring our 78-year-old elderly a decent home and a joyful day, and they urge people to serve in Project Home Works especially on their birthday, making the day a blessing to those in need.

Fiji Recovers Faster Than Expected

Dieu est la
Early July 2016, volunteers from Faithful+Gould and Atkins joined Habitat Philippines to build homes for Bantayan Island families, a place worst hit by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. Our volunteer Anthony Chung shared, “I was touched by a mother and son who were digging trenches with me and I could sense unspoken gratitude behind their smiles.”

It has been 6 months since Cyclone Winston stuck Fiji in February 2016. Habitat has assisted 6,483 families by distributing shelter-related kits. This surpassed our target of 5,000 families, thanks to village headmen who helped Habitat locate families in remote areas. When the Cyclone hit, Veniana survived under a tree shelter. Now, she is starting a life full of hope in a shelter brought by Habitat.

Ricardine and Roman Laventure’s children are healthier, happier and going to school since moving into their Habitat home in the Léogâne community of Santo, Haiti. The family is able to rebuild their life after the 2010 earthquake. On the front door of Ricardine Laventure’s house in Santo are the words “Dieu est la” — in English, “God is here”. It is the faith and hope that brings them resilience.
