Women Shine in Vietnam

We were proud to have seven women and one man join as volunteers at the Vietnam Big Build from 1 to 8 October, joining around 190 volunteers from the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Vietnam and the Philippines. They spent eight days building safe and secure homes with 20 homeowner families. Olivia (left) enjoyed building with the other ladies and accomplished her goal once again - she made a promise to join a Habitat trip every year since 2005.
House of Memories
"Make it beautiful again"
Grandpa Wong Shek seldom stays at home. Every morning, the 92-year-old leaves his home in Kwun Tong and spends a few hours sauntering to Sai Kung. To his neighbours surprise, Grandpa Wong stayed at home over the one weekend - because he was expecting a visit from some Habitat volunteers. "I love my house! It was chosen by my daughters, and I always hoped to make it beautiful again." He witnessed our volunteers repair the peeling ceiling in his kitchen. After the renovation, Grandpa Wong hopes to be able to keep his house in a decent condition, where his precious memories with his family remain.

Renewal of 25 Elderly Homes!
Thanks to CWM/Nethersole Fund
With financial support from the Council for World Mission (CMW)/Nethersole Fund, Project Home Works will now be able to provide repair services to 25 families with elderly residents from November to January. On 12 November, students from the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Shue Yan University visited the Cheung Hang Estate in Tsing Yi. They cheered up the elderly by repairing the peeling paint from the ceiling and sharing their happy moments from school.
Build in Yunnan
HK Volunteers Thrilled by Villagers
Six Hong Kong volunteers participated in our Yunnan Build project last month, working with villagers of Wuding County in mainland China. The villagers were living in cracked houses built of mud and wood. To address their housing needs, Habitat for Humanity China has coordinated with the local government to provide non-profit loans or grants to five low-income families.
The volunteers hope that their homes will be finished in January, so they can enjoy them during Chinese New Year.

Ecosan Toilets Generate Income
Real estate company, Bontop Group, has donated RMB 500,000 to establish a housing fund for Yaojia Township, Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province. The fund provides no-interest loans to low-income families to rebuild safe and affordable houses. The target is to build at least 20 houses within a year in this way.
In addition to financial support, Bontop Group will send 16 volunteers to build with the homeowners. They are looking forward to becoming long-term volunteers and are eager to celebrate finishing the houses with the families.
World Toilet Day (19 November) is about helping billions of people who live without a toilet. Habitat for Humanity Malawi were a great example this year, following the theme of 'toilets and jobs'. They built 'ecological sanitation' or 'Ecosan' toilets for 130 families, recycling the contents of the latrines to make fertilizer for agricultural uses. The families can now use inexpensive manure to grow tomatoes and make additional income to improve their living conditions.

With volunteers' help, we provide a hand up to families in need of a decent place to live.
