Race the Runway 2018 x Hollywood action actress JuJu Chan

More than one thousand runners participated in the Race the Runway event last Sunday, held in Kai Tak Runway Park. Hollywood action actress JuJu Chan took time off from her busy filming schedule to run the 10-kilometre race. And then runners cooled down taking photos with special props in the Habitat booth! The event raised more than HKD120,000 to support Habitat’s work in Hong Kong. Big thanks to all the runners, volunteers and corporate teams from Dow, Transamerica and Under Armour for their support. Hope to see you all next year.

Guangzhou Build: Moving on from mud bricks
From 20 to 22 April, near 100 volunteers joined our 7th Habitat Young Leaders Build event in China, and travelled to Guangzhou to build houses alongside six low-income families in Daba village. The volunteers, drawn from Hong Kong and mainland China, spent their weekend helping families currently living in old and primitive houses. These dilapidated houses have mud walls and tiled roofs; have become eroded and cracked over the years, meaning considerable leaks when it rains. One of the home owners, Mr. Chen, exclaimed as he worked with the volunteers, “I am very happy to have a new house. I feel safe and secure for the first time,” and thanked them profusely for their assistance.
Mural Painting = Fun + Educational
The bad weather on 15 April did not stop passionate Sogo (Hong Kong) Co., Ltd staffs from volunteering. They visited Fortress Hill Methodist Secondary School to take part in our Project School Works activity. SOGO volunteers and students played a board game designed by Habitat Hong Kong before joining creative forces to paint the school’s walls. The day ended with joy and smiles on the student’s face as they received gifts prepared by SOGO! Thanks again.
Home Power Rangers end in triumph
We completed thirteen episodes of our radio programme ‘Home Power Action 13’ in early April. Produced by Habitat Hong Kong and broadcast on RTHK radio, it was a collaborative project involving more than 30 volunteers, working on script writing, hosting, acting in skits and post-production. Apart from the production team, we welcomed former and current volunteers as radio guests, sharing their experiences of supporting our local programmes – renovating homes – as well as our global programmes – building houses for low-income families overseas. With their support, each episode’s 30 minutes of airtime provided audiences with a comprehensive picture of poverty housing through guest sharing sessions, skits and housing tips.
