Indian widow Sarika finally walk out of darkness

A startling statistic from India: in recent years, as many as 45 farmers take their own lives each day. Sarika’s husband, Parmeshwar, committed suicide in 2015, leaving her as the only adult to take care of two children while pregnant with a third. She worried about how she would bring them up alone and contemplated death herself. However, after each day’s hard work in the fields to earn a limited income, Sarika says just seeing her children makes her fatigue fade away and stops thoughts of suicide.
Habitat India stepped in, helping to transfer land rights to Sarika, provide building materials and assisted her to build a new home. When you support Habitat for Humanity, you help women like Sarika and their children establish a foundation on which to build a better life. “Since I don’t have to worry about the house anymore, I can now think about my children’s future and work hard for it,” said Sarika.
Fun school talk
Once final exams are done, most students are eagerly looking forward to their summer break. Habitat was honoured to be invited to deliver a talk at Sha Tin Methodist College. We used smartphone apps to host a fun quiz competition and engage students in understanding global housing issues. The class could answer questions immediately on their smartphones. It was an exciting and interactive learning game – with the most challenging questions for students coming from video quiz showing how bamboo is used to build homes. After the talk, the students knew what they wanted to do for their summer holiday activities – join Habitat!
