Habitat Young Leaders Build (HYLB) ended in great success!
We are grateful to have over 50 volunteers to join the HYLB from 12 to 14 April to build houses alongside three families in Shaoguan, China, including a teacher and 16 students from Aberdeen Baptist Lui Ming Choi College, Canossa College, Cheung Chuk Shan College, and Christian and Missionary Alliance Sun Kei Secondary School. Despite the rain, the volunteers are working hard to provide low-income families with decent and affordable shelter.
Shaoguan is one of the poverty alleviation and development areas in Guangdong Province. There are still a significant number of villagers living in mud-brick houses with decades of history, and some houses have been out of repair for many years. Walls and roofs have been damaged and rotten, which may collapse at any time, especially when it rains heavily. Since 2018, our volunteers started to help rebuild the community in Shaoguan, and Karno is one of them.
Teacher with passion inspires students
“It is an amazing journey for the students and me! Although we are from different schools, we share a common goal.” Karno, the teacher from Aberdeen Baptist Lui Ming Choi College, is a ‘veteran’ in Habitat building trip, she joined our Cambodia Build in 2017. This year she brings four students to the HYLB, and they mix cement and lay bricks together. The trip gives the two generations an incredible and unforgettable experience to share.
Youth takes the lead on building homes

The building trip in Shaoguan marked a perfect ending note to HYLB. From December 2018 to April 2019, various advocacy, awareness and fund-raising activities have been taking place in 17 countries and regions in Asia-Pacific.

In Hong Kong, we mobilise youth volunteers to clean homes of the elderly in December 2018 and build houses in China in April 2019. We want to express our gratitude for the support from volunteers, corporates and public individuals, and we look forward to seeing you next year!
