A 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit Ya'an City, Sichuan Province of China on April 20, 2013, causing serious damage and some 2,000,000 people were affected. In response to the devastating earthquake, Habitat for Humanity China (HFH China), part of international non-government organization Habitat for Humanity, has set up the "Sichuan Post-Earthquake Rebuilding Fund" to help affected families rebuild safe, decent and affordable homes which can withstand 8.0-magnitude earthquakes. Families will be provided directly with grants, with regular monitoring conducted by Habitat staff and financial transactions inspected by an external Hong Kong auditor with international qualification.

Members of HFH China staff stationed in Chengdu, Sichuan, are currently in the affected areas assessing need and are liaising with local government to formulate disaster response plans. HFH China plans to initially focus on Qionglai City, located to the north-east of earthquake-hit Lushan County, to kick off the "Sichuan Post-Earthquake Rebuilding Projects". HFH China will formulate a long-term post-disaster rebuilding strategy to help affected families build permanent homes.

As of April 22, according to the local government, a total of four people were reported dead, 158 injured and some 80,000 people were affected in Qionglai; some 500 houses collapsed, over 4,400 were severely damaged and more than 19,000 houses were partially destroyed. Six areas in Qionglai City, including Nanbao Township, Huojing Town, Gaohe Town, Tiantai Town, Gaguan Town and Rinzai Town, are seriously affected. Among these areas, Gaguan Town and Tiantai Town are located just 30 kilometers from Lushan County. HFH China is currently assessing the damage in these six areas as possible sites for "Sichuan Post-Earthquake Rebuilding Projects".

The victims in Qionglai are in urgent needs to rebuild their home. Please make your donation to "Sichuan Post-Earthquake Rebuilding Fund", to support Habitat for Humanity's work of building safe, decent and affordable homes which can withstand 8.0-magnitude earthquakes.

In addition, homes built or being built by HFH China in Sichuan, sustained no damage after the earthquake. Since the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, HFH China has built more than 1,500 homes in ten villages in the townships of Xiaoyudong, Bailu, Jiexing, Zhuyuan and Qionglai. These new homes are constructed with strong red bricks and strictly follow building standards so they are able to withstand 8.0-magnitude earthquakes. HFH China partners with affected families and works with local communities and volunteers to bring new homes and hope.。

Various high-profile supporters, including former US President Jimmy Carter, renowned international artistes Jet Li, Daniel Wu, Karen Mok and Kay Tse, have joined hands with HFH China to build homes with partner families in Sichuan, alongside other volunteers from all walks of life.

Act now! Please support Habitat's "Sichuan Post-Earthquake Rebuilding Fund" to provide direct grants for affected families to build homes and hope!
