Let’s celebrate World Toilet Day!
So many of us take our toilet for granted, and yet 4.2 billion people still live without access to safely managed sanitation facilities.
Having access to adequate water and sanitation facilities is vital to our health and wellbeing and for so many girls around the world, lack of access to a hygiene toilet can impact their access to education. Celebrating World Toilet Day is not a 'fun and nice to have' it's a necessity. Celebrating the UN World Toilet Day and raising awareness of the critical need to tackle the global sanitation crisis is something we can all do.
In Bangladesh, 85 million people are in need of improved sanitation. Educational institutions are in critical need of safe water and sanitation facilities, particularly in secondary cities and rural areas. Schools have toilets which are unused, damaged, unhygienic and insufficient for the needs of the students. There is usually no water supply and students encounter stagnant water on the floor, insufficient ventilation and light, lack of privacy, overflowing septic tanks and excreta in the toilet pan.
There are no facilities for students with disabilities, and two thirds of toilets have no soap or handwashing facilities nearby. 86% of female students use old cloth during menstruation and cannot change the cloth in school as there are no facilities for Menstrual Hygiene Management and only 22% of schools have separate toilets for female students.
We are launching a new project to provide secondary schools in Bangladesh with safe water, handwashing facilities and toilets. This will help to reduce the spread of diarrheal diseases, which kill 100,000 children in Bangladesh each year.

Help us to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030. Celebrate World Toilet Day! #worldtoiletday

“Volunteering with Habitat’s public policy team, I sincerely appreciate Habitat’s efforts in improving housing in Hong Kong, and it is very meaningful that such an impactful international NGO can lend its expertise in launching initiatives that will alleviate the city’s housing problems.”
- Anthony / Skills-based Volunteer
Thank you to Reckitt Benckiser Hong Kong (“RB”) for expanding its partnership with Habitat for Humanity in its third phase of the Community Anti-Epidemic Support Programme. As a global leader in health and hygiene, the collaboration with Habitat will support nearly 500 low-income families and vulnerable elderly people, including women in the community who have been financially impacted by COVID-19. RB has donated Dettol and Aerogard cleaning, disinfection and protection products to support family health and hygiene and provide a deep cleaning programme. The programme employs local domestic workers to provide deep cleaning service to vulnerable elderly and families living with disabilities in substandard housing. Thank you RB for your continued support of our critical work in Hong Kong.
“Aside from heavy rain that would seep through holes in the roof, what worried me the most was that our family could be evicted anytime since we don’t own the place we were staying in.”
For more than 30 years, former soldier Bunthoeun — who lost both his arms in a landmine accident in 1986 — had to live with the fear of eviction while struggling to provide for his family. His family used to live in a small shack made up of rusty tin sheets and wood debris. He relied on his monthly military pension of US$125 to bring up his eight children in Kandal province, Cambodia.
Building a better future in Vietnam
In Vietnam, low-income families living in poorly built housing are constantly being forced to rebuild their homes due to natural disasters, such as the recent typhoons. Techtronic Industries Co. Ltd. (“TTI”) is partnering with Habitat for Humanity to help 72 families in the Tien Giang province to have safe and decent shelter. The project will include new home construction, home renovation, access to clean and safe water, new latrines, WASH and COVID-19 prevention training. The project will also provide 250-300 primary school children with access to clean water, handwashing facilities, hygiene kits and training.
