Boat Field trip to Tolo Channel and Double Haven

Leaders: Dr Bernie Owen and Dr Raynor Shaw

on Saturday, 25 October 2008

We are delighted to welcome Dr Bernie Owen and Dr Raynor Shaw to lead another boat geological and geomorphological excursion to the beautiful and inaccessible northeastern coast and islands of Hong Kong. This is our most popular field trip and an early reply is recommended.

The boat is to travel along the Tolo Channel, a flooded river valley that follows a major northeasterly fault line. We are first stopping at Lai Chi Chong on the way to examine Jurassic sedimentary and volcanic rocks along the shoreline. Then the boat trip goes to Chek Chau (Port Island, including a stop for the first time) to view the dipping sedimentary rocks that originally formed in a desert setting, and then the near vertical delta sediments at Bluff Head – the oldest rocks (at around 360 million years), in Hong Kong.

The boat then makes a circuit around Double Island to view “supratidal platforms” and the Yan Chau Tong Marine Park. Arriving at Double Haven we are going to see “sombrero islands”, before stopping at Ap Chau, a sedimentary island made up of large angular blocks of rock. The excursion then swings around Kat O to view its steep rugged coastline and sea caves – and most importantly of all, Hong Kong’s giant spectacular natural arch which we shall walk through. We then stop at Governor’s Beach (where we stop for swimming or relaxation) on Double Island, before returning to our bus.
