Thank you for the positive response to our Annual Review 2019, The Globe, and its stories of the wonderful talks, events and experiences we had last year. It can be found here and printed copies can be requested here, which we’ll be delighted to send you by mail.
As some more interesting reading during these difficult times with a temporary pause in our events, please find here some updates on recent speakers and what they have accomplished since they spoke at RGS-HK.
Chris Bertish
Chris Bertish in 2019 sailed 3,000 miles in 10 days, across the Pacific, from Hawaii to Fiji. He is also planning a world record attempt of The Cape Point Two Oceans Extreme Challenge, to sail 120 kilometres in less than 14 hours in a small catamaran with no support craft.
Paul French
Paul French has continued writing for the South China Morning Post. His non-fiction audio book, Strangers on the Praia, has been recorded with Radio and Television Hong Kong (RTHK) and has been selected as a 2020 New York Festivals Radio Awards Finalist.
Victor Mallet
Since visiting RGS-HK, Victor Mallet has been appointed as Paris bureau chief by The Financial Times, where he is responsible for coverage of France across macro-economic, political, corporate and business news.
Paul Niel
Paul Niel has since broken a Guinness World Record for the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites visited in 12 hours, a total of 13, with his wife Esther Roling.
Mark O’Neill
Mark O’Neill’s most recent book, China's Russian Princess: The Silent Wife of Chiang Ching-kuo, was published in March 2020 and tells the remarkable story of the marriage between Chiang Ching-kuo, former President of the Republic of China from 1975-88, and his Russian wife Faina Ipatevna Vakhreva.
Robert Swan OBE
Robert Swan and his son Barney embarked on the last of four Antarctic expeditions powered entirely by renewable energy to clean up CO2 in June 2019.
David Fox-Pitt MBE and Neil Laughton
In the 2019 New Year Honours list, David Fox-Pitt was given an MBE for his contribution to ‘the adventure challenge industry and charity’.
In August 2019, David Fox-Pitt MBE and Neil Laughton completed a journey from Lands’ End to John O' Groats on Penny Farthings. This included cycling up to 80 miles a day for 10 days with no suspension, gears and solid wheels in order to raise funds for the charity Mary's Meals.
Since then, distinguished mountaineer and adventurer Neil Laughton set Guinness World Record titles on a Penny Farthing for the fastest speed with no hands, fastest 10 kilometres and furthest distance in one hour.
Ryan Pyle
The third series of Ryan Pyle’s weekly television series Extreme Treks started on BBC Earth Asia in September 2019. The first instalment of his column, The Nomad, was also made available online in the past year.
