Hello!

It’s been a busy time!

Kassia Women’s Choir’s ‘Kassia Goes Pop!’ shows were a hit with a lovely night under the stars at the Yacht Club, a fundraiser at the UBS Theatre for The Women’s Foundation and of course, three very well received performances at the Rugby Sevens. We’re back into rehearsals this week for “It’s a 60’s thing…” with two shows in June.

It’s the time of year when our 17/18 year old students make concrete plans for their future in the performing arts. We have interviewed three students with exciting plans and will include their ‘Stories So Far…’ in upcoming newsletters, beginning this month with Tori Nassberg, who has been with Katterwall since Day 1!

Recently our students have also had great results in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival as well as securing roles in the upcoming professional UK production of Annie, which opens at the HKAPA in May.  Terri Oliver’s Mic technique workshops continue to be well received and some participants have gone into a professional recording studio with excellent results.

Looking ahead, our young singers will be appearing at Oxfam Musical Marathon this Saturday. Like I said, a busy time!

Yours

Director, Katterwall

Tori Nassberg

Story so far... Meet Tori Nassberg

One of Katterwall's first students from 2002.

K: You are about to go to college in America.  What and where are you going to study?
T: I will be attending New York University's Tisch School of the Arts where I will be studying towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Drama. My primary training will be in Acting at Tisch's Stella Adler Acting Studio, with an additional focus in Musical Theatre.

K: What do you like about singing and performing on stage? What motivate you?
T: The energy of a performance is what draws me most of all. I love being present, capturing an audience and telling a story. Knowing that my voice or my words can make an audience feel something they hadn't before is incredible.

I'm always motivated by the people around me. Whether it be my family and friends, or teachers at Katterwall for example, I am forever pushed by others beliefs in me, and my desire to pursue what I love.

K: Can you name any favourite moment at Katterwall?
T: After 9 years it's hard to single out favorite moments, my entire experience at Katterwall has been amazing! I've really enjoyed all of the incredible performance opportunities, for example singing live on television for a Christmas Special or singing back-up for the winner of Australian Idol! Another one of my favorite moments also happened recently when I came out of a lesson and was told how mature and improved my voice has become. I wouldn't have been the singer, performer or person I am today without all of my teachers and friends at Katterwall, and to know I have done proud by them is amazing.

K: What will you say to young students who want to study performing arts in the future?
T: I say follow your heart and go for it! It's hard work to get there, but the end result is worth it to know you've found the right and best place to continue studying and pursuing your passion.

Tongue Twister...

Red Buick, Blue Buick

On another note...

Franz Liszt had a stock reply for young women who demanded unmerited praise of their singing. “Maestro” a young woman would enquire, “do you think I have a good voice?” “Ah, my dear young lady,” Liszt would reply, “good is not the word for it.”
