Hello!
As for many in HK, July is a quiet month at
Katterwall but you find us with a few tricks up our summery sleeves: Matthew is
back by popular demand with the CCOHK in the sold out premiere of 'The Magic
Jungle' at Tsuen Wan Civic Centre and HK City Hall, Soho Collective members are
out entertaining throughout the month at various corporate events and of course
we're teaching throughout the summer too.
We're busy publicising Kassia Women's Choir's newly released
CD 'The First Five Years' which was launched last month. Keep an eye out for
upcoming reviews! If you'd like to order a copy, please drop Celia a line in
the office – it would make a great gift for that special person in your life
;O)
I'm pleased to announce that the concert in aid of Sichuan earthquake
relief at St. John's Cathedral which Kassia Women's Choir took part in last
month raised HK$100,000 which will go directly towards rebuilding collapsed
schools.
And of course there's our annual Kassia Summer
Fling just round the corner (rehearsals starting 6th August) – if
you're going to be in HK next month and fancy having a sing, drop us a line!
Yours |

MEET... Jo
Gray
|
Kassia
Women's Choir founding member
K: What's your musical background?
J: None really! It
started with joining school choirs (including the one that got to sing Godspell
on the local radio - whooo!), then some musical theatre at
university.
K: How did you get involved with Katterwall?
J:
Five
years ago, when it all started, I happened to go for dinner with two girls who
had just auditioned, and they talked me into it and I've since done all the
shows except, ironically, "the last five years"...!
K: What has been your most memorable Kassia Women's
Choir experience so far?
J:
Standing
on stage waiting for the curtain to rise on the very first concert, with
knocking knees, trying to maintain a "pose"... Also, singing in the
Cultural Centre was amazing. But it has all been really good fun and I
have met some great people.
K: What would you like the choir to do in the
future?
J:
More
cheese! (And some more, hard, serious stuff at Christmas!)
K: What would be your ultimate show to be in?
J:
Anything
at all? Jesus Christ Superstar... or Chicago. (I have diverse tastes...)
K: Any funny memories?
J:
Oh
lord, it has to be looking around and watching us all trying to do some of
the dancing. Sorry, Bethan. Then there were many drunken nights out
when it first started - they were funny, but I have no memory....
K:
What
performers and singers inspire you or that you aspire to be like?
J:
I
don't aspire to her life, but wouldn't it be amazing to sing like Whitney?
K: What music do you listen to for pleasure?
J:
All
sorts... depends on my mood. Am going through a bit of an Amy
Winehouse/Coldplay phase right now, but I still stick on the show
tunes every now and again....

IN FOCUS:
Hullaballooer [noun] 'hʌləbə,lu-ə
|
A musician (singer) aged 5 – 8 who participates in Kassia
Children's Choir, Hullaballoo.
Amongst their multitude of skills, a Hullaballooer can sing
a major scale with Sol fa hand symbols, memorise ten songs plus movement in 8
weeks, perform confidently and imitate a monkey on a tightrope walking
backwards.
This past March marked the 1-year anniversary of
Hullaballoo. Hooray for us! If you've not come to visit us in the last
year, here are some of the things you've missed: holiday music in multiple languages, a violin
solo, singing in harmony, a Mid-Autumn Festival song in Cantonese, The
Green Grass Grew All Around with hand-made illustrations, Pudding on
piano and a whole mess of other exciting musical adventures. If you have come to visit us, or if you are
now inspired to do so, there is plenty more to come...
This summer there will be 3 summer programmes
from 28 July – 1 August. We'll sing
about summer, learn about music and make new friends! If you would like to join the fun, please
contact Camille for more information or to enroll.

Thought for the day... |
|
|
Music
is the purest form of art... therefore true poets, they who are seers, seek to express
the universe in terms of music... The singer has everything within him. The
notes come out from his very life. They are not materials gathered from
outside.

My Choice:
阿牛
Artist:
陳奕迅 Eason Chan
I have just bought a new Sony walkman mp3 player. This song is an essential requirement. It was the first that connected with when I started to try and explore Canto Pop. Eason stands out from other Cpop stars because of his character and he sings very well. It's a beautiful and powerfull song that to me will always be synonymous with my time in Hong Kong.
