Hello!

We've had a busy time of it at Katterwall recently with lots of comings and goings. We are very happy to welcome our new teacher, Sally Martin, to the fold. See below for an interview with her.

Summer Fling was a great success, raising the most money from a Summer Fling raffle so far: $10,500, which will go towards the hugely valuable work of the Christian Action's Chungking Mansions Service Centre for Refugees and Asylum Seekers.

We waved goodbye to our HKAPA Scholarship student this summer. Melodee Mak, previously a drama undergrad and recipient of the Katterwall Vocal Scholarship for 3 consecutive years, has graduated and I'm pleased to report is already finding professional performing work. We wish her every success!

We held auditions at the HKAPA this week to find Melodee's successor.  Celia and I were really impressed with four finalists and have offered a year's worth of free singing lessons to first year drama student Steve Leung Chung Hang. I look forward to hearing how he progresses.

Everything is back in the swing post-summer now. Kassia Choirs began rehearsing on Wednesday night and I can honestly say, 'Now that's what I call a Kassia Christmas' is going to be cracker!!

Yours

Director, Katterwall

Sally Martin

Meet... Sally Martin, new teacher at Katterwall

K: When and how did you first start learning singing?
S: I first started learning music at school. My headmistress at Primary School was also our music teacher and she had us singing in choirs and solo singing from an early age!  One year I was entered into the local music festival solo singing competition and to my surprise, won!  I then started having singing lessons and went on to gain a place at the Junior Royal Academy of Music in London where I went every Saturday from the age of 11 to 19. I then went on to train at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where I got my degree.

K: Who inspired you to study music?
S: My singing teacher at the Academy had lots of wonderful students, many of whom were older than me, and watching them in performances and going off to become professional singers really inspired me.

K: What is the most memorable performance that you have done?
S: There are several memorable performances that spring to mind but one of the most bizarre was on the edge of the Delaware River in New Jersey, America. We were there as a group on a tour of the States and on this particular night, the piano had to be rolled down a field to the river and we were all covered in bug spray! Very entertaining!

K: Who is your favourite composer?
S: My favorite composer is Benjamin Britten. At music college I played the part of Mrs Noye in Noye’s Fludde and have loved all his works ever since.
