Hello! I hope you've had a great summer.

Kassia Men and Women are presenting their 'Summer Fling 2008' on Saturday 30th August at the Helena May and 10th September at the HK Fringe Club. As ever, I have been astounded by how much can be achieved in a short space of time when you have a deadline to work to – all very impressive!

As I type, Camille is heading out the door to start Hullaballoo's latest term inspired by Olympic Fever – it sounds like they're going to have a great time with lots of new songs and games... am tempted to join in myself.

We are a matter of weeks away from starting rehearsals for 'A Kassia Christmas Carol' with Kassia Men and Women. It will be our own version of Dickens' classic replete with narration, actors, and musical favourites from Burt Bacharach, Andy Williams and Josh Groban plus 'Polar Express' and 'How The Grinch Stole Christmas' – a real mixed bag of Christmas styles. Auditions are happening throughout September in case you know someone who'd like to get choral this Christmas.

Speaking of choral, I'm singing with a brand new choir 'Die Konzertisten' who will be performing three of Bach's Motets at St. John's Cathedral on 19th September under the baton of Micheal Ryan.

Have a great September,

Yours

MEET... Janet Ho

Hullaballoo's assistant / pianist and Soho Collective member

Katterwall: How are you involved with Katterwall?
Janet: I've been involved with Katterwall since early 2007 when I become the accompanist and assistant for Hullaballoo – there is a precious moment in each of the classes. I was also one of the Christmas Carollers at an HSBC cocktail event last year for Soho Collective.

K: What is your musical background?
J: I started learning piano when I was 5. I then joined the school and church choir and took part in the HK Music Festival nearly every year where I got good results. A few years ago, I began my vocal training with Ms. Chiffon Lee and am about to start studying at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in voice. I'm also a conductor and accompanist for the Hong Kong Treble Choir.

K: What are you up to at the moment?
J: I'm busy with accompanying jobs and teaching my private students. I'm also writing a script for my church for Christmas Eve. And I'm back to school soon - the new term starts Sept 1st.

K: What's been your best performing experience thus far?
J: I think it's my school audition (just joking). Actually, it's a musical called ‘Up To You’ produced by my church. From writing the script, casting, composing music etc, we did everything ourselves. I act as the bitch and dance and sing in the musical. Is it cool? I really enjoyed the show.

K: What are your aspirations as a musician?
J: I love music and enjoy being a musician. I hope my music is infectious (whatever it's performing or teaching) and it helps others to not only enjoy music but also develop a good attitude towards music. I aspire to become a great singer so someday I can perform in different events and places, singing various styles of songs.

Janet will be working with Hullaballoo as their new term starts and we wish her the best of luck in her vocal studies at the HKAPA.

IN FOCUS: Kassia Men's Chorus new term

Rehearsals start on 6th October for our fourth Christmas show - where does the time go?! It doesn't seem 2 minutes since we ordered our first batch of fabulous purple shirts for the occasion of 'White Christmas' at the HK Fringe Club.

Since then we've performed in bars, restaurants, theatres, cinemas, amphitheatres, shopping centres and harbourfests.

This year, the men will be performing in 'A Kassia Christmas Carol' at the Sheung Wan Civic Centre. They will be singing old music, new music, film music, pop music, ballads and madrigals accompanied by a narrator and actors. It's the most adventurous Christmas show so far and I can't wait to get started!

We are always keen to hear from new singers in town so if you are tempted by the thought of having a good old sing once a week, drop me a line!

My Choice:  ‘The Water Is Wide’

Artist: Whim'N Rhythm 'Eleven'

This all-female a cappella group from Yale came to Hong Kong a few years ago and put on a great show at the HK Fringe Club. Bethan listens to their CD in the office often – my fellow fishes and I particularly enjoy their version of 'The Water Is Wide' for obvious reasons.
