Hello!

You find us deep in rehearsal mode for 'A Kassia Christmas Carol' which is going to be great a show for all the family. I'm pleased to announce that local actor and voice-over artist Michael Harley will be narrating the show in his own, unique style.

Some of our younger singing students are going into RTHK's recording studio to record a jingle for a new children's radio show – a great opportunity to work with professional technicians and to hear themselves on the airwaves too!

Katterwall is going to be popping up at a few Christmas fairs in the next few weeks promoting both 'A Kassia Christmas Carol' and Kassia Women's Choir's CD 'The First Five Years' – the perfect gift for the music lover in your life!

Yours

MEET... Leyda Rogers

Hullaballoo member

Katterwall: What is your favourite part of Hullaballoo?
Leyda: Singing!

K: What is your favourite song to sing?
L: "It's up to you” (from the Muppet Babies)

K: What do you like to do other than singing?
L: Playing and reading

K: What was the last live performance you went to see?
L: ‘Around the World in 80 Days’. I was also the White Kangaroo in our school production of ‘Alice Down Underland’.

From Helen Walker, Leyda's mum: “Hullaballoo is Leyda's favourite after school activity! Leyda has always loved music / singing and I was keen for her to do some singing in a fun environment and not just as part of a school choir. Leyda has been at Hullaballoo for 2 years and has really enjoyed the variety of songs offered, singing them in the car on the way home or giving me after work performances. Leyda also likes contributing to the choreography. I think not only has it developed her appreciation of music and rhythm but also her confidence too!”

IN FOCUS: A Christmas Carol - the music connection

Carol was originally a medieval round dance and then a word for a particular type of ballad. However, by Dickens' time the word carol had come closer to its modern meaning, being a joyful hymn specific to Christmas. Dickens takes this musical analogy further, dividing his book into five staves instead of chapters.

The Christmas Carol has been reimagined by, amongst others, the Muppets, Mickey Mouse, Blackadder, Mr. Magoo, the Flintstones, Bugs Bunny, the Jetsons, Brer Rabbit and Sesame Street.

Actors who have played Scrooge include Alastair Sim, George C. Scott, Patrick Stewart, Scrooge McDuck, Tim Curry, Yosemite Sam, Ross Kemp and Jim Carey (in 2009).

Kassia's version will bring together music from a whole host of musical styles including easy listening, cinema soundtrack, medieval carol, film musical and contemporary classical which together with narration by Michael Harley and a cast of silhouette's, promises to ignite imaginations this Christmas.

My Choice:  ‘I Still Remember’

Artist: Bloc Party, ‘A Weekend In The City’

It’s about how the singer remembers falling in love with a girl he was at school with during a teachers' training day. Not sure why I like it as much as I do, but I suspect it’s because it sounds like a really good way to use a teachers' training day!
