Hello and Happy New Year!

Hot Off The Press: Soho Collective will be singing at the HK Rugby 7s again this year - look out for us at the HK Stadium on Sunday 30th March!!

Kassia Youth Choir and Kassia Men's Chorus both have new shows this month. The Youth Choir will be 'Divas In Training' this Wednesday (5th) including Tina Turner, Katherine Jenkins and Britney Spears on the 5th @ HK Fringe. The men will be 'Feelin' Groovy' including the Beatles, James Taylor, Simon & Garfunkel and Bob Dylan on 12th & 13th @ Amici. Tickets for both shows are on sale now.

Soho Collective are in rehearsals for their next show 'Into The Groove' celebrating the hits of Madonna who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on the 10th of this month. Interesting fact: Did you know that Madonna, Prince and Michael Jackson all turn 50 this year? Wow.

It's a time for hellos and goodbyes at Katterwall. We bid farewell to Brian Lam, Katterwall's administrator who is leaving to pursue a career in Traditional Chinese Medicine and extend a huge welcome to Jessica Parson who joins the teaching team this month. See below to find out more about her!

Yours

MEET... Jessica Parson

Katterwall's newest teacher!

K: When did you arrive in HK?
J: "My first vist was in 2005 when I spent six weeks teaching English at a summer camp for secondary students. I arrived permanently last August with a contract to teach English in a kindergarten in Fanling where I incorporate music as a learning tool for the children."

K: What's your singing background?
J: "Growing up in a typical 'country church' in the Midwest of the U.S., I was raised singing hymns, contemporary Christian songs, worship choruses, gospel numbers, and oratorio pieces. In middle school I became involved in musical theatre and during secondary school I was very active in honor choirs, including All-State, regional and national choirs. I have traveled throughout the U.S. and Trinidad with various choirs, as well as a unique performance of 'The Messiah' at Carnegie Hall in 2004. For my music degree I studied opera.

K: Why move to Hong Kong?
C: "After my first visit, Hong Kong stole a piece of my heart - I love the fusion between East and West. I planned to teach English temporarily with the intent of pursuing my music career in the future. Never would I have predicted that the opportunity of teaching at a studio such as Katterwall could have taken place in so short an amount of time, and I also didn't realize that so many music opportunities lie here in Hong Kong!"

K: What's your favourite style of singing?
J: "My favorite musical styles to sing are musical theatre and opera. The musical styles I most enjoy listening to are musical theatre and indie/folk."

K: Please share your best performing memory.
J: "The senior recital of a music student is often the highlight of his or her university experience, and mine was no exception. My mother made my beautiful formal dress, and sharing some of my most enjoyable and difficult pieces with family and friends was indescribable. I also doubt I will have the change to sing a Russian aria and contemporary jazz piece on the same concert ever again!"

K: And your best teaching memory:
J: "My fondest teaching moment was when 11 of my students gave their first recital. The fruit of their work, as well as mine, was displayed on the faces of their listening loved ones. I was so proud to have been a part of the beginning of their musical journeys."

K: What are your hobbies (outside of singing!)?
J: "I enjoy composing contemporary church music, watching movies, reading philosophy books, home decorating TV channels, cooking, eating with friends, and peering through the occasional Vogue magazine."

Jessica will be teaching singing to adults and children on Saturdays. As the newest member of Soho Collective, her first performance will be as part of the HK Literary Festival words and music event 'A Sense of Home' at St. John's Cathedral on Sunday 9th March, 6pm. Entrance Free.

IN FOCUS: The First Five Years
It was 5 years ago this month that the first auditions were held for Kassia Women's Choir. The original advert I placed in HK Magazine's Black and White Section is framed on my desk as a permanent reminder of those early steps for Katterwall: me in my teeny tiny spare room hoping that people might be interested in the idea. More than 70 brave women turned up to audition for this unknown choir and we met for our first rehearsal on Thursday 10th April 2003 - the same day the government announced the quarantine for all households with confirmed SARS patients. Not a great time to be starting a new enterprise but as the dust settled I reasoned that if we could see our way through this we could survive pretty much anything. 5 years on, I am still loving the adventure and can't wait to see where the journey will take us next.

Kassia Women's Choir will be recording a CD of greatest hits 'The First Five Years' in May. Watch this space.

Thought for the day...

"For me, singing is a way of escaping. It's another world. I'm no longer on earth."

- Edith Piaf

 On another note...

Female vocalist to her keyboard player, "I'd like to do 'My Funny Valentine' tonight...but can you think of a way to jazz it up?" Keyboard player replies, "Sure, we can do the first chorus in G minor, then modulate to G# minor for the second chorus in 5/4 time, then modulate to A minor in 3/4 time for the bridge, then cut off the last 3 bars." She claims, "That might be too complicated to do without a rehearsal." Keyboard player responds, "Well, that's how you did it last night!"

From Kim Haslam, Katterwall Singing Teacher

My Choice:  'Rain'  by  Madonna

"I love 'Rain'. The harmonies are simple but beautiful, and there's some really interesting vocal work. The song is featured in our Madonna Concert, 'Into The Groove', at the start of April!"
