Hello! It's the start of our new year here at Katterwall – new teachers, new students, new projects and new choir terms are all getting under way.

A huge welcome to our two new teachers, Andrew Swift from the UK and Roxana Castillo Barousse from Mexico. As well as teaching in our studio, Roxana will be leading Hullaballoo and Andrew will be conducting Kassia Men's Chorus next term (as well as being the MD of HK Singers upcoming pantomime, Aladdin!).

There's also an exciting new venture for our vocal students this month. 14 of them are currently preparing to perform on TVB as part of a marathon charity show in aid of Po Leung Kuk. They will be providing the backing vocals and funky moves in a slot featuring Cantopop stars Prudence Lau, Myolie Wu and "Swing". The show goes out live on Saturday 12th September – tune in!

Also on the theme of charity, the raffle held as part of Summer Fling last month raised enough to fund three birthday parties for children in the care of Social Services, orphanages and church groups. A local charity, “Birthday Happiness” have found a great way to make these kids feel special for a day with cakes, games, presents and entertainment. Just as it should be. Thank you to everyone who supported.

Yours

MEET...Andrew Swift

Katterwall's newest singing teacher

Katterwall: What is your training background?
Andrew: From a very young age I got myself involved in musicals both amateur and professional. At 16 I joined the National Youth Music Theatre of Great Britain performing at Glyndebourne and the Edinburgh Festival. At 19 I started my degree in Musical Theatre Performance at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London. Since then I have been working as an actor and musical director both professionally and in London drama schools.

K: How did you hear about Katterwall?
A: When I had decided that I would like to further my career in Hong Kong, I spent some time researching companies for which I felt I could be most useful. Katterwall was one of the first companies I came across and after some communication it became clear that for both of us it would be a perfect match.

K: Please share your best performing / musical directing memory.
A: It was very recently. A couple of months before moving here, I musically directed a production of Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along. Being an absolute Sondheim fanatic, and this being the first of his shows I had MD'd, it was bliss.

K: What are your hobbies, other than singing?
A: I am extremely interested in History and Politics. In particular development issues within the Global South.

K: Who are your favourite singers?

A: Frank Sinatra, Patti Lu Pone and (believe it or not!) Elaine Stritch.

If you would like to enquire about lessons with Andrew, please contact us: info@katterwall.com / 2575 3931.

My Choice: “I don't know how to love him”

Artist / Album: “Jesus Christ Superstar, Andrew Lloyd-Webber”

When I was in high school, I belonged to the theatre group. When we did "Jesus Christ Superstar", I played Mary Magdalen and the guy who played Jesus was my love crush for the whole of high school so, while I was singing to him, I was not only acting, I was feeling and meaning EVERY SINGLE WORD of the song!!!! It was so cool and frustrating at the same time!!! Every time I listen to the song it takes me back to that time and I LOVE IT!!!
