Hello! Rehearsals begin this week for Kassia Men and Women in preparation for their swingin' Christmas show “Martinis & Mistletoe” in December. The programme is full of favourites from the 50's including “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”, “I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm” and “Jingle, Jingle, Jingle” . The Women's Choir will also be reprising our specially commissioned piece from 2006 “Christmas Spirits” by Paul Barker and Rodney Bruce.

Our vocal students did us proud in their TVB charity performance last month. They sang and danced in front of a live audience of 8,000 at the Hong Kong Coliseum and the show was beamed around the globe to many more. Congratulations to them all!

We are getting quite a few enquiries to provide carollers this Christmas – it's shaping up to be a musical time, which is marvellous indeed.

Yours

MEET...Roxana Castillo Barousse

Katterwall's newest singing teacher

Katterwall: What is your training background?
Roxana: I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Singing at the National School of Music. I have performed in many of the most important Concert Halls and Auditoriums in Mexico, singing classical repertoire as Mozart's Requiem, Carmina Burana by Carl Orff, Kroenungs Messe by Mozart, Pamina by "Zauberfloete", Mozart, Mussetta from "La Boheme" by Puccini, Leticia from "The Old Maid and the Thief", Menotti, among others. I have also presented Zarzuela such as "La Verbena de la Paloma", and also done musicals appearing as Grizabella from Cats, Mary Magdalen in Jesus Christ Superstar, Eponine and Fantine from Les Miserables and Christine from Phantom of the Opera.

K: How did you know about Katterwall?
R: I came to Hong Kong as a tourist with my family and liked HK so much that I decided to stay. Crazy but true. I started looking for a music job, found out about Katterwall and believe it or not, in that exact moment they were looking for a teacher!! so I applied and now I am part of this incredible school!!!

K: Please share your best performing memory.
R: The role I have enjoyed the most is Rita, who is the principal role from the comic opera named "Rita" from G. Donizetti. I presented it last July.

I heard the opera by mistake one day and liked it so much that I decided to present the whole opera in my Bachelor Professional Exam. It has only 3 singers: Rita (Soprano), Beppe (Tenor), Bartolo (Baritone) and an additional actor, who only has a speaking role. Although it is not one of the most famous works by Donizetti, if you get the chance, please listen to it. I can asure you that it is a very precious jewel and you'll enjoy it both ways, musically and as a comedy!!!

K: What are your hobbies, other than singing?
R: Besides singing and listening to music, I love to spend my time enjoying nature and animals. Whenever I get the chance I lose myself in the wilderness and get as close to it and it's living creatures as possible!! Maybe the fact that I also graduated with a Veterinary Degree, might explain my love for animals!!!

K: Who is / are your favourite singer(s)?

R: Uff I have many!! As a musician, I like all kinds of music but I'll begin with the classical performers: Pavarotti, Juan Diego Florez, Josh Groban. I love country music, Toby Keith and Kenny Rogers are two of my favourite ones. I love to dance bachata, salsa and latin rhythms, and my favourite singers for that are Marc Anthony and Aventura.

IN FOCUS: Trinity Guildhall exams in Musical Theatre

In addition to the Associated Board examinations in Singing, we have decided also to offer our students the opportunity to study towards and sit Trinity Guildhall Grades in Musical Theatre.

These examinations will be available for solo, pair or group work. All three disciplines of singing, acting and movement will be assessed. Candidates must demonstrate their abilities in these three disciplines through integrative performance, as is the nature of Musical Theatre. The Syllabus offers a wide choice for selection of performance material.

Musical Theatre Grades are open to anyone at any age, running from Grade 1 to Grade 8.

Advanced Grade Qualifications for solo and pair examinations (Grades 6 – 8) have been accepted into the UK Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) tariff and will attract up to 65 UCAS points for Grade 8 Distinction.
