Happy New Year!

Katterwall Youth Music Theatre (KYMT), lead by Andrew Swift,  has just started putting together ‘Ladies Who Lunch’ – a revue featuring some of Stephen Sondheim’s many fabulous songs for women. Auditions are happening now until Friday 18th February. Drop Celia a line in the office if you’d like to get involved in this exciting project.

Ladies Who Lunch will be presented at the Skylark Lounge on Saturday 14th May.

Audition season is just round the corner! If you would like to audition for Kassia Men’s Chorus or Kassia Women’s Choir’s next combined JAZZ term - Fly Me to the Moon (starting mid-April) we will be scheduling short and sweet auditions from Monday 14th March.

Yours

Glee!

Kassia Women's Choir are currently rehearsing 'GLEE', taking inspiration from the hit TV show of the same name. The first 13 episodes alone featured 70 songs, so I had plenty of scope for programming!

But did you know that Glee Clubs have been around for over 200 years

The first was founded at Harrow School in 1787. In England, they were superseded in favour of choral societies in the mid 19th Century but around the same time, Glee Clubs became very popular in North American and Japanese colleges and universities, despite the fact that most are choruses that no longer perform 'glees' (which in this context does not refer to the mood of the music or indeed of its singers, but to a specific form of English part song popular between 1650 and 1900.)

The oldest Glee Club in America is the Harvard Glee Club, established in 1858, whose notable members have included Leonard Bernstein, Theodore Roosevelt and FD Roosevelt (Now, I'd very much like to see their version of Single Ladies!)

On another note...

I sometimes wonder which would be nicer – an opera without an interval, or an interval without an opera.
