Hello!

We’ve got a lot going on this next couple of months including workshops, classes, rehearsals and shows.

I will be working with Kassia Men and Women on their annual Summer Fling (rehearsals starting mid-August) plus running two Boot Camps (see below to find out more), Andrew will be expanding his original musical ‘A Spell For Lunch’ into a full-length show for teenagers, Naomi will be working with her Singing’SKool kids plus Katterwall Youth Music Theatre and Celia will be leading our younger singers in song with Hullaballoo.

Thank you to everyone who came along to our jazz show ‘Fly Me To The Moon’ – the new HK Repertory venue worked out really well and all three nights were well received.

Have a great summer, wherever in the world you find yourself!

Yours

Director, Katterwall

IN FOCUS:
What is Music Boot Camp? (and a little something about perfect pitch)
by Bethan Greaves (instructor)

It is for those of you out there who want to improve your ability to sight-singing – whether it’s so you can be a stronger choir member, audition with more confidence or for pure interest and enjoyment.

What Boot Camp isn’t is teaching you how to have perfect pitch (which is being able to sing an E, for example, without hearing it first). I don’t have perfect pitch, Andrew doesn’t have perfect pitch... in fact, very few people in the world have perfect pitch! It’s something you either possess or you don’t but rest assured, if you don’t have it, it doesn’t make you a lesser musician. It does mean you have to work harder on sight-reading... which is where Boot Camp comes in.

I work within the multifaceted (and glorious!) world of music theory and sight-singing, approaching it from many angles including: reading rhythms, understanding intervals, harmonising against others, score reading, listening exercises and extending musical memory.

There are two levels of Boot Camp on offer this summer. If you’re interested in finding out more, please drop us a line and we will help you decide which level would be most beneficial.

Level 1: 11th – 13th August
Level 2: 18th – 20th August

Highlights of last year's performance:

Musical - A Spell for Lunch for ages 11 - 18

Bri is an ordinary American high school student, with an extraordinary gift. A dark ancestry links her and a mysterious, clandestine group in the school, The Lunch Spell. Soon, both Bri and The Lunch Spell come to realise their fates are entwined. However, they aren't the only ones who wield supernatural power in the school.....

This summer Katterwall will be producing an extended version of its brand new original, all-singing, all-dancing Musical Comedy. The piece has been especially written for Katterwall.  It will involve a week of intensive singing, dancing and drama rehearsal training, as well as the opportunity to get involved with prop-making and design. The culmination will be a live performance of the musical in Central.

We are looking for young people aged between 11 and 18 to enroll for this exciting program. With the opportunity to work under theatre professionals from around the world.

Tongue Twister...

A Tudor who tooted a flute
Tried to tutor two tooters to toot.
Said the two to their tutor,
Is it harder to toot;
Or to tutor two tooters to toot.

On another note...

Music is what feelings sound like
