Hello!

Our ninth Summer Fling started rehearsing this week. The show is going to be Friday 9th September in the lovely setting of St. John’s Cathedral’s Li Hall. Tickets (which include wine and snacks) are limited and on sale now. We will be holding a raffle in aid of local charity ‘Orangutan Aid’ which uses 100% of its funds to assist projects working with orangutan rehabilitation, and their rainforest habitat protection in Borneo.

Katterwall Vocal Academy new teaching term starts on Monday 29th August. If you’d like to find out more about singing lessons with our teachers, please drop us a line.

I’m pleased to announce Kassia Men and Women’s Choirs combined winter term is going to be ‘A Glee-ful Kassia Christmas’ – taking inspiration from Fox TV’s Glee’s Christmas special. I know it’s always a strange thing to even think about winter singing when the humidity is still through the roof, but if you’re a fan of Glee or just fancy a seasonal sing, drop us a line to arrange a (quick, painless) audition. The term starts on Wednesday 28th September.

Yours

Director, Katterwall

IN FOCUS: Summer Fling 2011

As always, we’re offering a mixed bag of music for our shortest and sweetest of terms:
  • At Last (which has been covered by more than 40 artists including Eva Cassidy, Beyonce, Doris Day and Nat King Cole)
  • Bim-Bom (considered the first bossa nova song, composed by Joao Gilberto)
  • Son-of-a-Preacher Man (first recorded by Dusty Springfield)
  • Skylark (The yearning expressed in the lyrics is the lyricist Mercer's longing for Judy Garland, with whom he had an affair)
  • Manhattan Transfer Medley (four songs from the multi-Grammy award winning vocal quartet)
  • In These Delightful Pleasant Groves (Purcell’s madrigal which started life as incidental music for a play by Shadwell)
  • plus guest appearances from friends of Kassia.
Tickets are on sale now, available from Katterwall office / Choir members / you can summit an online order form

About Auditioning for Kassia Choirs
by Bethan Greaves, Musical Director

It’s coming close to audition season for Kassia Choirs so I thought I’d write a little bit about the audition process for anyone thinking about coming along.

Form: When you arrive, you will be asked to fill in a form which includes giving your singing-related info. This is nothing too intense (the most common singing experience people put is ‘In the shower’!) Whatever you write just helps me find out a bit more about you.

Room: The audition takes place in one of Katterwall’s teaching rooms – there’s only you and me there.

Short: An average audition lasts around 10 minutes.

Chat: Usually, we’ll have a bit of a chat about what (if any) singing you’ve done – if the answer’s “None” it’s fine, honestly!

Sing: Then it’s the singing part which consists of 3 things: two simple warm ups (which I teach you. The first is to get into the swing of singing, the second is to help me find your range: Are you a soprano or alto? Tenor or bass?) You can then choose a song from an audition book I have compiled with lots of very well-known songs in it (e.g. Amazing Grace, My Favourite Things, Scarborough Fair, Silent Night, Love Me Tender etc.) which you sing with me at the piano.

And that’s it!
Email us now to arrange an audition time!

On another note...

There’s two kinds of music – good and bad. If you like it, it’s good - if you don’t, it’s bad.
