Hello! This past month has been fabulous for Katterwall. Kim Haslam, our newest teacher arrived from the UK; Camille Lively won Hong Kong's first ever 'Broadway Idol' competition; Matthew Hale can currently be seen in Ang Lee's latest film 'Lust, Caution' and I am now a regular presenter for RTHK Radio 4's 'Non-Stop Classics'.

Later this month, Camille will be starring in Perilous Mouth's production of 'Company' at the Fringe and both myself and Matthew will be performing in and co-musical directors of Lindsey McAlister's brand new musical comedy 'Flesh' in November. It's time to get those diaries out for what promises to be a full season of wonderful entertainment!

Yours

MEET... Kim Haslam

... Katterwall's new singing teacher!

K: What's your singing background?
Kim: "I grew up singing in choirs including the Welsh National Youth Choir. I then studied with Gordon Sandison at the Birmingham Conservatoire. I also took up Musical Theatre and Jazz at the Birmingham University."

K: Why move to Hong Kong?
Kim:"Because I hate British winters!!! Seriously though, I was drawn to the job itself, and didn't really think about the move. I love to travel, so relocating to a new city is a very exciting part of the job."

"K: What's your favourite style of singing?
Kim: "That's a difficult question! At the moment, I'm really enjoying singing lots of Musical theatre, but I also really enjoy the challenge of those really difficult Bel Canto arias."

K: What are your hobbies (outside of singing!)?
Kim: "Scuba diving, swimming, going to the beach, African drumming and photography."

K: What do you think is going to be the most challenging part of the job?
Kim: "Bringing what I've studied to life in the real world is going to be a challenge, and getting to grips with the way the company works and how I can fit into this well oiled machine might take me a while!"

Flesh.jpg

IN FOCUS: Flesh - a brand new musical comedy

'Flesh' is an iconic lifestyle magazine for women everywhere, however editor-in-chief Saskia Ferdinand doesn't exactly practise what she preaches (her idea of a balanced diet is a Mars Bar in each hand). Circumstances dictate a change in lifestyle for Saskia and the show charts the bumpy and lumpy road to a fitter, healthier lifestyle... Or does it? It's a world of extremes: excess, denial, obsession, compulsion. Welcome to the world of Everywoman (well, lots of our friends at least!).

Performances: Nov 21 - 24 , 7:45pm,
Shouson Theatre, HK Arts Centre, Wanchai
Tickets available from Urbtix from Oct 21, Tel: 2734 9009

Thought for the day...

"A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song."

- Maya Angelou, American poet

On another note...

Q: Mum, why do you always stand by the window when I practice for my singing lessons?
A: I don't want the neighbours to think I'm employing corporal punishment, dear.

What's on your iPod?

From Barry Lee, Kassia Women's Choir accompanist, pianist, composer and educator.

My Choice: "Tres Pieza Para Orquesta De Camara" by Astor Piazzolla

"Tango Ballet is a set of 20th Century Tango pieces written for string ensemble and piano. The fast movements are very engergetic and sophisticated. The slow movements have the aroma of the urban settlement of Buenos Aires. It is a tango in Bach's fugue style! It starts softly with instruments joining gradually, the ending is so grand and exciting."
