Hello,

It’s that time of the year when we turn the air con up a degree or two and start to think about the approach of winter.

Katterwall Vocal Academy, KYMT, Singin’SKool, Hullaballoo and Kassia Men and Women’s Choirs are getting back into the swing of things after the summer break – please see the calendar below for our updated autumn performance schedule.

We’re very happy to welcome Katterwall’s latest addition to the teaching staff – Terri Oliver is a wonderful vocalist from Canada, specializing in jazz and pop. Find out more about her in the interview below.

I’m pleased to report that Summer Fling 2011 was a great evening, with the raffle raising $6,500 for Orangutan Aid, a fantastic result. Thank you to everyone who came along and supported us!

Yours

Director, Katterwall

MEET: Terri Oliver (Pop/Jazz Singing Teacher)

K: What is your background?
T: I did my formal training with Tom Oliver of Voice Concepts, a classical singer who instructed me in the methods of the Seth Riggs (or speech level) technique.  I also studied piano from the ages of 6 to 13 and played alto & baritone saxophone and drums in the school band.

K: What advice would you give to young singers if they want to learn pop music singing?
T: Any young singers who want to learn how to sing pop music should understand that having good technique is of the utmost importance.  Without a good understanding the basics one can never begin to develop as unique artist.

K: Different from musical theatre and classical singing, a huge part of pop music performance involves mic techniques.  Can you please share some tips with us?
T: After beginning your journey as a pop (R&B, soul or rock) singer it will not take long before you begin to understand the importance of mic technique.  Even a singer with the greatest belt (projection) cannot compete with the volume of the drums, bass, piano and a wailing guitar.  In order to survive the gig scene you will have to maintain good vocal and mic technique.  One basic idea is that the softer you are singing the closer you should be standing to the mic.  The opposite is also true.  If you are singing louder you should be standing further away from the mic so that you don't blast your audience.

K: What else do you do when you are not singing?
T: When I am not singing I really enjoy exploring other parts of my artistic expression.  Some of those things include acting, painting, designing jewelry & accessories, cooking and planting flowers.

To book lessons with Terri, please email us with your availabilities and music background.

On another note...

On his 70th birthday, Rossini’s friends collected 20,000 francs to build a monument. “What a waste of money” he groaned, “Give me the cash and I’ll stand on the pedestal myself.”
