Q: What are job descriptions and how frequently should they be revised?
A: Job description is a set of document that defines the purpose, accountabilities and requirements of a job position. In general, job description should be timeless and stands permanently unless the nature of the job is  changed.

April 2008 HR Highlights

Inflation and Unemployment Rates Continued to Go up

According to the figures released by the Census and Statistics Department, fast-rising food prices pushed Hong Kong’s underlying inflation rate to a 10-year high of 5.3% last month. The government spokesman said the pickup in inflationary pressure in recent months was largely due to the surge in food prices, which was driven by the global food inflation.   The cost of food, excluding meals bought away from home, increased 17.2% last month over a year earlier, while the cost of dining at restaurants rose 5.9%. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate increased from 3.3% between December and February to 3.4% from January to March, according to the latest figures released by the Census and Statistics Department. Unemployment was mainly observed in the decoration and maintenance, communications and restaurant sectors.   Academics say rising inflation has pushed unemployment up as some employers cut staff in attempt to control soaring business costs.   [Source: SCMP (A2)/ HKEJ (P10)/ HKET (A4)/ China Daily (HK-1), 18 April 08]

Among the surveyed sectors, the highest adjustment was found in professional and business services sector, at 5%, followed by banking finance and insurance.    On other hand, survey conducted by the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management with 120 interviewed companies said nearly 88% of their staff had received pay rises, compared with 79% a year earlier.  Among the interviewed companies banks gave the biggest increases – an average of 6% - followed by retail (5.3%) and Shipping/ Terminal (4.5%).  [Source: HKET (A4), 8 April 08/ SCMP (A2)/ The Standard/ HKET (A4)/ China Daily (HK-1), 22 April 08 ]
