Q: What is Competency Model?
A: Competencies can be defined as a set of skills, related knowledge and personal characteristics which enable an individual to perform a job, a task or an activity within a specific function. A competency model refers to a group of core competencies required for corporate development and usually number 8 to 10 in total. The number and type of competencies in a model will depend upon the business nature along with the culture and values of that organization.

HMI introduces SuccessFactors Performance Management Application

Effectively managing employees' performance has never been more critical than in today's dynamic environment. Employees must be constantly aware of their job progress, and managers must have the visibility to the team's performance and accomplishment in order to provide coaching and guidance to their subordinates. HMI proudly introduces SuccessFactors Performance Management Application which helps to transform the rush and tedious once-a-year performance review into an ongoing performance management process that ties employee performance to bottomline business results. This module helps the busy HR managers, line managers and employees to:

- Streamline and shorten the time required for the tedious performance appraisal process
  significantly.
- Better understand the metrics and standard used in the performance appraisal process such
that a sense of fairness and equality can be promoted.

Career Development Workshop at CMA Choi Cheung Kok Secondary School , June 21, 2008

We are pleased to work with the Youth Committee of the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Tuen Mun) to deliver a career development workshop to the students at the CMA Choi Cheung Kok Secondary School on June 21, 2008. The event was completed with the participating students' better understanding of themselves and their career objectives.

The event started off by giving the students an overview of general employers' expectation as well as the current job market situation. Then we shared with the students how to equip themselves for the job market. Following a question and answer session, we organized mock interviews for the students to prepare them with the communication skills, stress management skills, and the organization skills needed for real job interviews.

It was good to see the students' active participation in the event, and we enjoyed every moment of it. We look forward to the students' success in their career development in the future.

The latest figures released by the Census and Statistics Department also revealed that the total employment in the private sector surveyed increased by 2.5% in March 2008 compared with a year earlier. The total number of vacancies was 56,250, representing an increase of 14% over last year, but the seasonally adjusted total vacancies showed a decrease of 3.5%. Increases in employment were recorded in the financing and insurance sector (9.0%), the medical, health and related services sector (6.6%) and the real estate (5.9%). On the other hand, employment decreased in the manufacturing sector (-3.6%), the sanitary and similar services sector (-2.5%) and the wholesale trade (-1.3%).  [Source: HKET (A18), 21 June 2008]

Business Environment

About two-thirds of small and medium enterprises in Hong Kong are optimistic about business prospects in the coming 12 months despite the economic slowdown in the United States. According to a survey conducted over the last two months by the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, 68% of the 500 random SMEs surveyed said they are unaffected by the slump.  Survey results show 67.6% of the respondents viewed Hong Kong as a key market for their businesses, followed by the mainland with 58.6%, the rest of Asia with 36.4% and the United States with 29.6%. [Source: SCMP (B3)/ The Standard/ HKEJ (P6)/ HKET (A8)/ China Daily (HK-2), 5 June 2008]

On the other hand, HK companies may shut 20,000 factories in the neighboring Guangdong province this year due to increased costs from higher fuel prices and wages, according to Danny Lau, chairman of the Hong Kong Small and Medium Enterprises Association. Lau said at the end of this year, maybe only 50,000 HK-owned businesses will remain. The government last week raised gasoline and diesel prices by at least 17% after global crude oil prices surged to record highs. Higher employee costs in Guangdong prompted Foxconn International Holdings Ltd, based in Shenzhen, to set up production sites in lower cost Hebei and Shanxi provinces in northern China. [Source: China Daily (P10), 28-29 June 2008]
