Product recall

What?
In a nutshell, a recall involves removing all food products of a particular line or brand from sale, distribution and consumption. This is usually initiated when safety hazards are identified in the product after its sale has begun. Recalling dangerous food items benefit consumer health, the industry’s reputation and aid governmental action; in some instances, they may be mandated by governing bodies.


Legislation
Food product recalls are governed by the Public Health & Municipal Services Ordinance, which dictates that food on sale for public consumption must be:

•   Wholesome or not toxic
•   Uncontaminated
•   Properly labelled
•   Unadulterated or unpure
•   Fit for human consumption

Government officers may be authorized to examine and seize any food which he suspects breaches the above criteria.

Violations may lead to legal action and lawsuits against manufacturers, importers and distributors of the food.
