How heavy is your prawn?
Dear [FIRSTNAME],
It seems like a bizarre question to ask, but sit tight; it may well be a question with overreaching implications. Indeed, rumors regarding the sale of tampered prawn products on the market have been flying all over the grapevine. Why tamper with prawn, you ask; fiddly, slippery creatures!
Priced at higher than HKD$150/kg, significant profit can be made by unethical suppliers by increasing the weight of prawns sold on the market through the injection of a filler substance – which is indeed what certain companies have been doing for increased profit.
Recently video footage and eyewitness reports have been released regarding the injection of hazardous fillers into individual prawn to increase their wet mass and therefore increase profit discreetly.
This is done through injecting substances which are liquid at room temperature but solidify after refrigeration. This allows the prawn flesh to absorb 15-20mL of injected liquid, which solidifies later to ensure that the extra weight is locked into the prawn’s body.

A series of scientific experiments has demonstrated that there is no noticeable difference between both exterior and interior appearance for treated and untreated prawn, with treated prawn being slightly more bloated and therefore more appealing to the consumer. However, depending on the filler substance ingested, symptoms can range from indigestion to long-term, irreversible harm, such as stomach cancer.

Imagine your manufacturing, catering or wholesale business crumbling because one of your suppliers decides to provide you with unethically manufactured prawn products. Apart from breaching a number of guidelines and laws issued by the Center for Food Safety, you would also find yourself at the receiving end of multiple acrimonious lawsuits.
