FUGU: THE DEADLY DELICACY
Dear [FIRSTNAME], |
Most of us have probably heard about the pufferfish. From cute Bloat in the popular film “Finding Nemo” to the lethally popular fugu sashimi, it has a strange reputation; cute yet deadly, they are also known as 河豚 in Oriental cultures. |
The pufferfish contains large amounts of tetrodotoxin in its flesh and liver. Correctly prepared fugu sashimi induces intoxication, light-headedness and mild numbness of the tongue and lips, and is usually eaten for this unusual experience. |

However, if not correctly prepared, pufferfish sashimi or soups can cause rapid heart rate, decreased blood pressure and fast-onset paralysis of the tongue, bodily muscles and respiratory functions. Those who survive are often confined to a coma for multiple days before regaining consciousness. Indeed, tetrodotoxin is 100 times more potent than cyanide, the poison commonly used in murder mystery novels; its ability to be unaffected by heat and the lack of an effective antidote or treatment further exacerbates its toxicity.
Very recently, the government discovered the presence of tetrodotoxin in dried pufferfish sold from a stall on Ngau Tau Kok Road after a consumer complained of food poisoning. Last time this happened last year, a 59-year-old man was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Tuen Mun Hospital only hours after consuming pufferfish after he began vomiting and experiencing numbness in his extremities. Because there are currently no medications available to counteract the effects of tetrodotoxin poisoning, the government could only issue a general call for the public to stop consuming pufferfish.
