DEKRA warns against highly flammable Carnival masks

When the mask catches fire …

Survey
In the run-up to the Nuremberg International Toy Fair, DEKRA conducted its  own market research by anonymously testing a range of Carnival masks and wigs (zombies, pirates, skulls, devils and monkeys) purchased online.

WATCH OUT! A LEGAL GREY ZONE MAY BYPASS THE TOY

Safety Directive
Most of the tested masks underwent the standard flammability test as stipulated in the Toy Safety Directive, however some failed miserably: not only was the hair quickly ablaze but also the latex face was instantly engulfed in flames – a major risk for the wearer, no matter the age.

To prevent product recalls for such reason, DEKRA strongly recommends you to:

  • Have your product’s Technical Compliance File (TCF) duly
    documented

  • Perform thorough product validation, before launching the mass production, including the relevant testing

  • In case of products of suspicious quality or non-reliable suppliers, have your product randomly tested prior to shipment (flash tests)

The good news: Carnival articles almost completely free of dangerous plasticizers

Current tests reveal that, thanks to the strictly implemented regulation in the past years hazardous plasticizers and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) -in particular naphthalene- are much less widespread in such articles and are used in only very small quantities, if at all.

Tips for enjoying a worry-free Carnival

To keep consumers safe from exposure to chemicals and fire risks, DEKRA’s product testers have summed up the following important tips that retailers and market surveillance authorities can convey to end-buyers of children’s Carnival articles:

1. Make sure that the packaging carries:

  • the importer’s or manufacturer’s details
  • the age rating “3 years or older”
  • the CE mark
2. Make sure that the article appears to be of high quality

3. If you smell tar or solvents, air the mask thoroughly prior to use
