49th Merrie Monarch Festival

For three days, we watched the best of hula at the Edith Kanaka‘ole Tennis Stadium during the 49th annual Merrie Monarch Festival.  Thirty groups danced during the kahiko competition on Friday the 14th and the auana competition on Saturday the 15th.  They told stories of their alii as well as of love affairs, romance, Hawaiian legends and many beautiful places in the isles.

This year the title of Miss Aloha Hula went to Rebecca Lilinoekekapahauomaunakea Sterling of Halau Mohala ‘Ilima of Kaohao, Oahu.  Three former Misses Aloha Hula jointly presented the beautiful dance Ka Nohana Pili Kai on stage to celebrate her award.

Hula on the Beach

What a sweet way to think of arranging a Hawaiian beach party for a pre-wedding celebration!
The sun came out and warm weather set in almost just as the party was scheduled to start.  The Deep Water Bay on Hong Kong Island could provide an alternative picturesque setting to Ko Olina in Oahu for hula.

Our best wishes to the bride and can any one suggest which hula should we do at our next beach party?

Ula No Weo (Bright Red Glow)

Ula No Weo is a traditional hula.  This chant honors Kamoha`i, a Kaua`i chief, and praises the natural beauty of Hanalei Valley and other scenic places on the Garden Isle, another common name for Kauai.  The chant starts with a description of the glow of the sun:
The bright red glow of the sun

Shining on the `ilima blossoms ....
To learn this hula, please enroll in our Saturday classes from 3 to 4 p.m.
