Hong Kong International Hula Association Newsletter May 2009
Ohana Day

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed in 1993 that 15 May of every year shall be observed as the International Day of Families.  This year HKIHA organised a Hulala Carnival with the YWCA on 17th May to celebrate the Ohana (Family) Day.

Families joint together at the scenic Sydney Leong Holiday Lodge to make lei with fresh flowers bought from a local market.  Members learnt to give the lei they made to one another in the Ohana spirit.  Participants are treated to Kona coffee brought from Hawaii and delicious freshly-made macademia nut cookies.  After dancing on the perfectly manicured lawn under the warm sunshine, families almost forgot that they were not in Hawaii by the time they finished dancing the hula.

Recording Hula Motions

Hawaiian learn how to dance hula by memory.  For many students learning hula, it may be useful to take notes of the dance steps.  There is no best way to record the motions, so you can use whichever way works the best for you.

Stephanie devised a simple way to draw out the motions.  To see a sample of the notes for reference, please click here

Halema'uma'u

This song is written by Maddy Lam and Billy Ali'iloa Lincoln to praise the wonder of the mystic volcano on the Big Island.  The first two verses read:

Behold the beauty of Halema`uma`u
And its famous fire of the woman, Pele

To the visitor of the land of lava rocks
Evident it is that you are a great chiefess

To learn the hula, you can enrol in our Saturday class at Central.

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday to Susanna, our International Member from Sydney, Australia, who celebrated her birthday on 18th of this month.  Her daughter, Mary, worked extra hours the weekend before so she could come home on time for dinner. She was joint by her sister, two brothers and two guinea pigs in wishing their mother a fun-filled birthday.  Did you remember to do a birthday hula for Susanna?  If not, don't forget next year!
