Sponsorship for the Philippines

Gloria, our International Member, received a sponsorship of $10,000 from the Hong Kong International Hula Association to start a hula school in Aurora, the Philippines.

Gloria has lived in Hong Kong for a number of years and was active in helping HKIHA organize various competitions and activities. Her vision is to set up a training facility in the Philippines and to continue to preach the gospel using the facility.

Thanks to the support from our members, this sponsorship is a breakthrough for our Association to help the development of hula outside of Hong Kong and South China.

Pua Iliahi

Pua Iliahi means sandalwood flower in Hawaiian. S
andalwood forests were discovered in 1790 in Hawaii and the wood was exported on a large scale to China since it was highly valued for its fragrant scent. Owing to this trade, Hawaii is also known as “sandalwood mountain” in Chinese.  Because of over-harvesting, only small stretches of sandalwood trees now remain in forest reserves.

Pua Iliahi was written by Bill Ali`iloa Lincoln to celebrate the beauty and love for the sandalwood flower. The first two verses are:

          Truly loved, yes truly
Is the bud of the sandalwood
Won't you please return my love
              Or I shall be lonesome

How delightful it is to see you
In the shade of the breadfruit grove
The sea caresses my bosom
Speaking softly to my heart

To learn the hula, you can enrol in our Monday class at Mid-Levels.

Class for International Members

In response to demand from our International Members, who may not live close to a halau offering hula classes, HKIHA is now able to offer live beginners’ lessons to our International Members via the Internet.  We have successfully completed testing in September.  Members who wish to enrol can email HKIHA@cnconsultants.com
for the available time for classes.

From now on, members from New York to Los Angeles, and from Toronto to San Francisco, will be able to learn hula from home through HKIHA.

They are not our members but friends we made during our trip to Okinawa.  We were also able to visit some Hawaiian stores and managed to buy a beautiful pink Pau for Porscha.
