Prominent Hilo kumu hula Rae passed away Saturday March 20 on Oahu of an apparent heart attack. He was 56.
Rae died less than 24 hours after the death of Merrie Monarch matriarch Dorothy "Aunty Dottie" Thompson. Rae's own kumu and Merrie Monarch patriarch "Uncle" George died October 26 last year.
Rae collapsed after an afternoon performance of his Halau Hula O Kahikilaulani at Lanikuhonua Cultural Center on Oahu. He died a short time later at Hawaii Medical Center West.
Within a short six-month period, three of the greatest leaders and teachers of hula were lost to us for ever. If you wish to learn hula and listen to the teachings of the reverent leaders, if even for a short period, Don’t Wait! |

Kumu Rae was a very wonderful person who loved hula. He respected all those who were before him and when he taught, he gave himself completely. HKIHA has benefited greatly from his teachings and was impressed by his care for his students when he had prepared food for them as the class ran into the evening.
In honor of Kumu Rae, HKIHA is planning to produce a souvenir DVD, which will be presented to our Life Members. We shall also be teaching two hula dances inspired by him in our workshops during the second half of the year.

Leina'ala was a long-time and respected Hawaiian entertainer who passed away on January 8, 2000. The CD, “Pulelehua, My Precious Butterfly", was recently produced by her daughter in honor of her mother's musical legacy and background. The production celebrates the similar musical journey between the mother and daughter and their loving and everlasting bond that strengthens through time. The TV special "Pulelehua, My Precious Butterfly!", shown on KHON TV2 on March 25, protraits an unconditional love that a mother and daughter shared in this lifetime that continues until their souls meet again.
