"Waikiki"

The song "Waikiki" was written by Andy Cummings.  He recalled “It was a cold and foggy night in November 1938, and we were walking back to our hotel from the theatre (in Michigan).  I thought of Waikiki with its rolling surf, warm sunshine and palm trees”.

Every one of us has different memories of Waikiki.  This hula and song bring out the magical moments the place called Waikiki holds in our lives.  As the song goes:

There’s a feeling deep in my heart
Stabbing at me just like a dart
           It’s a feeling heavenly

I see mem’ries out of the past
Memories that always will last
Of that place across the sea …

Celebration of Life

Hundreds gathered in Hilo on the island of Hawaii in a celebration of life held from 1 to 3 pm on April 16 to honor Kumu Rae.  Among those paying respect were kumu hulas from Japan and a halau from Mexico.

Rae was remembered as a tough but loving teacher. Hundreds showed up to show their love for him, sharing food, music and Rae's true love, hula.  Born November 17 1953 in Honolulu, Rae passed on March 20 at Lanikuhonua doing what he best loved to do, dancing the hula.
