Sharing on Dr. Sun Yat-sen in Hawaii

Sun Yat-sen first went to Hawaii in 1879, at the age of thirteen.  It was in Honolulu that he was educated on modern forms of government leading to the establishment of the first revolutionary party in 1894 in Honolulu.

Members of HKIHA took the opportunity of the centenary of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s revolution to visit Dr. Sun’s family members in Hawaii and hosted a session on May 19 at the HKUGA Centre to share a piece of Dr. Sun’s history.

We are pleased to learn that the Honolulu City Council recently adopted a resolution declaring 2011 the Year of Dr. Sun Yat-sen.  If you wish to learn more, please visit the website of Dr. Sun Yat-sen Hawaii Foundation or contact HKIHA at (852) 6602 0201 for further information.

Lei Day

Hawaiian culture came alive on Lei Day, May 1, at the Kapiolani Park in Honolulu.  You could enjoy free Hawaiian music and hula performances at the Bandstand from 9 am to 5:30 pm.  Winning entries from this year’s lei contests were on exhibit the whole day alongside Hawaiian craft booths.

In case the fun-filled activities might wear you out, a bowl of acai from one of the food stalls could quickly recharge you for sure!

Students in Shanghai Eager to Learn Hula

Over 200 students and teachers at the Dulwich College Shanghai took their first lesson in Hawaiian culture and hula when HKIHA visited the school on May 11.

Shelli and Christina first presented a colorful introduction to the legend and history of the Hawaiian Islands.  This was followed by a demonstration of traditional and modern hula.  A virtual tour to the erupting Kilauea Volcano spewed out scores of questions exploding from the students’ inquisitive minds.  When the students calmed down a bit from their excitement, we asked them to form a huge circle and taught them a beautiful Hawaiian dance.

Thanks Shelli for inviting HKIHA to share Hawaiian culture and hula in Shanghai and we look forward to visiting other cities in China in the near future!
