Aloha to Bowie
|

Welcome Bowie
to our ohana! Bowie
joined us this month as our Assistant Manager. She is studying
B.Sc. (Hons) in Sport Management from the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, UK.
In the coming months,
she will help us develop a program to provide more
opportunities for the general public to appreciate hula in different
communities.
Bowie loves dancing and has learned different types of dances before, but
it’s her first time to danced hula.
If
you meet her in one of our events, please give her our warm aloha.

Visit from the University of Hawaii
|
Dean Roley, Professor Yang and Unyong from the University of Hawaii
visited our office to learn about the phenomenal growth and development of HKIHA as a platform for the sharing
of hula and the Hawaiian culture in Hong Kong and China.
Hula is considered an ideal activity to connect alumni from Hawaii. Dean Roley informed us that hula was
danced during the Singapore
reunion earlier this year as well.
If you wish to connect with other alumni from Hawaii and relive part of the memories
together, please join one of our hula workshops by calling (852) 6602 0201
or email hkiha@cnconsultants.com.

Kananaka – The Hawaiian Mermaid
|

Kananaka was a
mermaid who lived in the sea outside of Lahaina, Maui.
This song talks about the
famous Ma’a’a
wind, bringing the scent of the lipoa. She was thrilled
playing with the surf during the day and with the moonbeams at night. The first verse of the song is:
The
Ma’a’a wind blows
Bringing
the scent
The
fragrance of lipoa
Pick
(it) until we have enough ….
You can listen to the song by by Keali'i Reichel by clicking here. To learn
the hula, please contact HKIHA.
