Hawaiian Five-O Birthday Party
|

What a brilliant idea to celebrate the 50th birthday with a Hawaii 5-0 theme! We were invited by Case to create a unique Hawaiian atmosphere for his wife's grand birthday this month.
50 guests, wearing 50 lei made from fresh flowers, watched the hula performance by Jessica, Candice, Carmen and Bowie. After the performance, children and guests enjoyed a lesson on hula and shared an afternoon filled with fun and laughter. |
World Botanical Gardens
|

Hawaiian flowers are commonly depicted in hula. We like to invite you to gain an in-depth knowledge of Hawaiian plants and flowers from Professor Neel by touring the World Botanical Gardens.
The Gardens are situated on 200 acres of former sugarcane fields on the Big Island. Stroll through hibiscus, orchids and bormeliads to the lush Rain Forest Walk leading to spectacular waterfalls.
Come and join us for a visit to this fantasy garden on 4 August. Assembly time is 8:30 am at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. Please email HKIHA@cnconsultants.com to register. |
Pa’u Skirts
|

Pa’u skirts are specially made for the hula dancer. Many of the skirts you can buy from stores are produced mechanically in a clothing factory but the high quality ones have intricate designs, and are handmade and expensive. The skirts come in many colors such as red, pink, blue, purple, navy and white.
HKIHA has designed two series of pa'u skirts. One series highlights the Hawaiian gourd drum with kukui nut patterns. The other has a bright red background with Hawaiian plants designs. All the skirts are hand-made. You may be able to recognise these designs from our performances. |

Please find below the sharing from Jessica on her first hula:
Hi! I'm Jessica, a dance amateur from Beijing. I used to practise Latin dance for 4 years before I came to Hong Kong to study at the Baptist University. I got to learn Hawaiian dance from HKIHA. It reminded me of the so-called "grass skirt", when we talked about Hula/Hawaiian dance. Actually, it was more than that. I was first attracted by its happiness and joy. I kept smiling sincerely all the way when I first danced Hula. The movement of Hawaii dance was simple, compared with Latin dance, but it was more enjoyable, and it told a story by gently moving the arms and hands. That made me feel like being in Hawaii, with refreshing wind, white clouds, blue and clear sky, bright sunshine, beautiful coconut trees, sand beaches, flowers and so on. So relaxed, so delightful, and so comfortable! Cool! I encourage everyone to give it a try.
Thanks Jessica for your sharing. If other members like to share your hula experiences, please write to us at HKIHA@cnconsultants.com. |
