Meeting with Mermaid

Kananaka is the lovely mermaid who lives in the sea outside Lahaina in Maui.  But the mermaid in Hawaii does not only live in the legend.  We met one off the Wainanae coast in Oahu swimming playfully in the turquoise water in a sheltered bay.

To hopefully get a glimpse of the mermaid, you can join a catamaran tour along the west side of O`ahu.  You will swim with marine life such as dolphins (Nai'a) turtles (Honu) whales (Kohola) and fish (I'a) ... and after a refreshing swim, you will be treated with hula dances on board against the majestic setting of the Wainanae mountains.

Na Hula O Kaleiokapualani

Mahalo to Hi'ilei and Bobby who shared with us their love of God by inviting us to a practice session of their Na Hula O Kaleiokapualani at the Calvary Chapel West Oahu.  Students of the halau wore a green pa'u designed by Hi'ilei, symbolic of grace of God and His salvation.  They danced with beautiful hula movements to Christian songs sung in both Hawaiian and English.

Hi'lei's thoughts are: God alone is worthy to be worshiped.  May we willingly and joyfully come into God's presence with a grateful heart as we serve Him through this hula ministry.

Words from the Editor

I learnt different types of dances before, such as jazz and hip-hop.  When I learn Hula, it gives me a different feeling.  Hula brings me lots of fun and relaxation.  When dancing to the melodious Hawaiian songs, wearing the colorful accessories and beautiful skirts, I feel everything comes together in  perfect harmony.  I really look forward to dancing hula on a grass lawn or a beach in Hawaii some day.
