42nd Anniversary of the Culture and Entertainment Association

The Culture and Entertainment Association of Hong Kong, whose members included specialists in different dances and artists, celebrated its 42nd Anniversary at the Regal Hotel this month.  Many thanks to Mon, who invited us to present a hula demonstration to their members on this joyous occasion.

As we played the melodious Hawaiian music, heads started to turn and very soon, guests loaded with photographic equipment of different forms and sizes left their seats and lined up in front to capture the gracious movements of our performers.  The demonstration ended with rounds of applause from the members.

“The Moon Represents My Heart”

The Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival this year falls on the 12th September.  Apart from eating moon cakes or playing with lanterns, what about dancing a "moon hula" to celebrate the Moon Festival?

You can watch a performance of dancing hula with the famous Chinese song "The Moon Represents my Heart" (月亮代表我的心) by Halau Hula Olana of Aiea, Oahu, by clicking

Growing Your Own Hawaiian Ginger Plant

The sweet aromatic fragrance of flowers and leaves are characteristic of Hawaiian ginger.  If you wish to plant it at home, just pay attention to the following growing conditions:

1.   Temperature: Average to warm.  Minimum of 50˚F at night.

2.   Watering: Water often enough to keep the soil moderately moist.

3.   Fertilizing: Apply a general garden fertilizer about once a month.

So, are you ready to start growing your own Hawaiian ginger plant?  For supplier information, please email HKIHA at HKIHA@cnconsultants.com.

Member's Corner

"Over the summer holidays, my friend Winnie and I decided to do something that we had never done before - learn how to hula dance.  We were definitely a bit nervous about how it would turn out, but the 4 lessons that we had were most likely the most fun thing we had done all summer.  Winnie and I were introduced to a culture completely different from our own, were taught how to tell a story through the movements of our hands and body, and all in all, the entire experience was so interesting and enjoyable. Ultimately, we learnt how to express ourselves through an art form that we are not commonly exposed to here in Hong Kong." - Seraphina

Thanks Seraphina for the sharing. If other members like to share your hula experience, please write to us at hkiha@cnconsultants.com.
