Burgundy Spotlight: Domaine Faiveley
Faiveley Chambertin Clos de Beze 2013
AM 94-97      HK$2,000
Aromatically this is compositionally similar to the regular cuvée except that the fruit is slightly denser and there is notably better complexity. There is also more concentration to the gorgeously textured and highly extract-rich big-bodied flavors that also exude plenty of minerality on the caressing yet powerful finish that is initially linear yet as it sits on the palate really fans out. This superb wine does a slow build from the mid-palate on back to the massively deep finale. This possesses simply fantastic potential and should be alive and well 50 years from now if anyone has that much patience!
Faiveley Chambolle Musigny "les Fuees"   2013
AM 91-94       HK$1,100
This is the most aromatically complex of these 4 Chambolle 1ers if not the most elegant with its beautifully layered nose of cassis, plum, exotic tea and sandalwood scents. There is plenty of that beguiling sense of underlying tension to the intensely mineral-driven flavors that display excellent delineation on the concentrated and balanced finish. Note well though that this hugely long and mildly austere effort is quite firmly structured and will require patience before it´s ready for prime time drinking.
Faiveley Chambolle Musigny "la Combe"   2013
AM 91-94       HK$1,100
A pungent nose mixes notes of reduction and wood. There is excellent richness but also fine delineation to the intensely mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess outstanding length on the focused, balanced and seriously long finish. This is a powerful wine but it delivers it with grace and finesse. This is really good stuff and a classic Chambolle.
Faiveley Corton Clos des Cortons 2005
AM 94-96      HK$1,700
Allow me to cut through everything else and bluntly state that the '05 Clos des Corton Faiveley is quite simply the best young example of this wine that I have ever had the privilege of evaluating. A richly and densely fruited nose that is at once earthy and quite animale along with breathtaking complexity complements to perfection the big, rich and sleekly muscled flavors that are very firmly structured but again, not at all aggressive and the sheer depth of material on the palate-drenching finish is nothing short of phenomenal. To be sure, this is not and will not be a wine for even the moderately impatient and I'm not completely sure that 15 years will be sufficient to really see it at its best to buy it only with the (resolute) intention to allow it a long and comfortable cellar snooze. Remarkable.

Faiveley Corton Clos des Cortons 2010
AM 94-96      HK$1,300
A brooding, deep and introverted nose grudgingly gives up notes of cassis, earth, wood and a hint of animale. The intense, brawny and imposingly structured flavors possess superb volume and almost breathtaking power on the explosive and mouth coating finish that is of monumental proportions. This is a classic Corton yet consistent with the style of the 2010 vintage, this is not unduly rustic, indeed the tannins, while firm, are actually relatively refined. A knock out by any standard but at the same time, a wine for the genuinely patient.
Faiveley Corton Clos des Cortons 2013
AM 93-95      HK$1,200
A generous dollop of moderately toasty oak mixes with the highly layered nose of black cherry, cassis, warm earth and an impressive array of sauvage and underbrush notes. There is excellent richness to the overtly powerful and muscular flavors that possess an imposing sense of scale that continues onto the textured and mouth coating finish. Like several of the wines in the range in 2013 this is a big but not really massive wine that retains a sense of proportion even though the underlying structure is quite firm. This will need plenty of patience however.
Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin "la Combe aux Moines" 2010
AM 91-94      HK$600
Similar to the nose of the Combe d´Orveau, this is gorgeously complex though the components of it are notably different as here there is more emphasis on earth and a sauvage character to the exceptionally fresh and airy yet deeply pitched aromas. The rich, intense and palate saturating flavors possess excellent volume yet fine detail as well as a driving minerality that is buffered by an abundance of dry extract that imparts a seductive character to the hugely long finish. This is a classic Combe Aux Moines that is perhaps slightly less youthfully austere than usual at this early stage. In a word, terrific.
