Monday Delight
Pegau, du (Domaine) , Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Reservee 2012
RP 94      HK$450
One of my favorite wines, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Réservée is a classic. Beautiful on the nose, with notions of ground pepper, wild herbs, minerality and smoked plum and dark fruit, it’s medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and has plenty of tannin that comes through on the finish. Similar in style to a lighter-weight 2010, drink this beauty anytime over the coming 12-15 years.

Pegau, du (Domaine) , Cotes du Rhone Villages Cuvee Setier 2012
RP 88      HK$150
A step up over the Côtes du Rhône, the 2012 Côtes du Rhône Villages Setier is a rock-solid effort with classic Southern Rhône character in its saddle leather, wild herbs, dried flowers and pepper-driven aromas and flavors. Made from 60% Grenache and 20% each of Syrah and Mourvedre, aged all in tank, buy this delicious, fabulously Provencal 2012 by the case and drink it over the coming 2-4 years.
Paul Jaboulet-Aine (Domaine), Hermitage la Chapelle 2011
RP 95      HK$900
More dense, concentrated and structured, the knockout 2011 Hermitage La Chapelle, which comes mostly from the warmer, Le Meal lieu-dit, is up with the top 7-8 wines in the vintage. Offering up layers of black raspberry, powdered rock, chocolate, roasted meats and graphite, it flows onto the palate with full-bodied richness, solid mid-palate depth and masses of fine tannin that are sweet and polished. Reasonably approachable given the wealth of fruit and texture, it should nevertheless be given a handful of years in the cellar. It should have 20+ years of total longevity.
Paul Jaboulet-Aine (Domaine), Hermitage la Chapelle 2012
RP 97+       HK$1,250
The grand vin is the 2012 Hermitage la Chapelle, and it lives up to the billing in 2012. Coming mostly from the Meal and aged in just 20% new French oak, it’s a blockbuster that exhibits thrilling, mineral-drenched notes of spiced dark fruits, beef blood, black olive and toast. Full-bodied, deep, layered and incredibly concentrated, it has a stacked mid-palate and enough tannin to warrant another 4-5 years of bottle age. It will have 2-3 decades of overall prime drinking, and certainly evolve for longer.

The revamped Jaboulet firm, under the leadership of Caroline Frey, seems to have settled in and are now producing one serious lineup of wines from throughout the Rhone Valley.
