Clos de Tart - Crown Jewel of Burgundy
Clos de Tart was founded in 1141, and situated in the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis in Cote de Nuits. It is one of the oldest & most historically significant domaines in Burgundy, and one of only 5 grand cru monopoles in Burgundy (The other 4 are in Vosne-Romanee, namely, La Romanee, Romanee Conti, La Grande Rue and La Tache). Clos de Tart is the biggest grand cru monopole, it covers 7.5 hectares, the other 4 collectively occupy 9.8 hectares.

It is rare that in Clos de Tart's 900-year history, ownerships had been changed only for 4 times. Clos de Tart moved up a significant gear with the arrival of the manager and technical director, namely Sylvain Pitiot in 1996. In clos de Tart, different zones have been carefully mapped out according to soil types. Typically the harvest here is one of the latest in the region, as Sylvain likes to be sure of full phenolic ripeness. The wines are matured in 100% new oak and are bottled unfiltered. They display a seductive perfumed nose and are harmonious, refined and complex on the palate, with great aging potentials for decades.

"Tasted at the pre-dinner vertical to mark Sylvain Pitiot´s retirement from the domaine, the 2007 Clos de Tart Grand Cru is more easy-going, more nonchalant than the 2008 with bright redcurrant and cranberry fruit mixed with a subtle marine influence...The palate is balanced with plenty of sappy red fruit. There is something almost Oriental about this Clos de Tart - touches of Hoisin and spice developing towards the finish that has melted in recent years, and become more fleshier and corpulent. I would drink this now and over the next decade." - Neal Martin

"Mild but not invisible wood frames very ripe yet cool and airy dark fruit aromas that speak of earth, violets, underbrush and a hint of menthol that leads to reserved, intense and tautly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that are textured, naturally sweet, sappy and concentrated while being supported by a notably firm but not aggressive tannic spine and excellent length on the balanced and palate staining finish. This should require between 15 to 20 years to arrive at its apogee as it´s noticeably more structured but unlike some less successful ´08s, the phenolics here are quite ripe as the low yields and late picking date are clearly in evidence. This resembles the great 2001 more than a little yet there is even more overall depth of material. In short, this should be truly great in time." - Allen Meadow

"Soft floral and toasty oak notes add breadth to the notably ripe nose, indeed this is much riper than its 2010 counterpart. Aromas of plum, chocolate and subtle spice notes merge into supple but broad-shouldered flavors that possess good energy and excellent depth on the velvety yet very firm finish that is at once supported and shaped by the solidly structured, indeed even robust finish. This is a very serious wine that was expressly built to age and it should improve for out to 20 years if kept in quality storage conditions." - Allen Meadow

"Moderate wood frames very ripe liqueur-like aromas of plum, cassis, floral and ample spice and earth nuances. There is excellent richness to the opulent yet relatively refined big-bodied flavors that exhibit a subtle minerality on the powerful, mouth coating and driving finish that possesses outstanding complexity and persistence. There is a hint of warmth but overall this is quite well-balanced and the length is remarkable. My sense is that while this will age effortlessly for decades, it should not be particularly difficult young." - Allen Meadow
