Making Enterprise SOCIAL
|
Nepal is one of the world's five poorest countries. Its 17 million people, many of whom cling to the ever more precariously terraced Himalayan mountainsides for survival, are threatened by accelerating environmental damage.
Through a ground-breaking initiative called Kathmandu 2020, Anil has engaged literally thousands of people in Kathmandu to implement hundreds of community projects that affect infrastructure, education, career development, and the preservation of Nepal’s historical and natural heritage.
On this trip to Hong Kong,
Anil will speak about his experience implementing environmentally sound
technology in Nepal,
as well as sharing his thoughts on the best way to develop financially
sustainable and growing social enterprises. As China and Hong Kong faces similar problems on
issues of energy generation and environment degradation, Anil’s experience is sure to
provide useful case studies for our practitioners working on similar
issues, and to offer mutual learning opportunities for students.

Born
in Kathmandu in 1961, Anil Chitrakar earned his B.A. in mechanical engineering
from Rajasthan University before working for the Royal Academy's Alternative

the gap between existing technological solutions and the poor whose lives these
solutions can improve.
An Ashoka fellow, Anil successfully created an efficient and
environmental friendly electrification of Nepal by lobbing the World Bank, who was planning a large-scale
hydro-plant on the Arun Koshi River, to implement a distributed-grid hydropower
