WORLD PREMIERE

WHAT MAISIE KNEW by SCOTT MCGEHEE and DAVID SIEGEL |
|
|
[GALA]
|
USA, 2012, English, Drama
Cast: Julianne Moore, Alexander Skarsgård, Steve Coogan, Onata Aprile, Joanna Vanderham
|
|
Based on a contemporary interpretation of the classic Henry James novel,
and set in present day New York City,
the story centers on Maisie, a charming but vulnerable seven-year-old girl
enmeshed in the bitter divorce of her mother (Julianne Moore), an aging rock
and roll icon, and her distracted and meandering father (Steve Coogan), an
international art dealer. As Maisie is shuttled back and forth between them,
she comes to rely more and more on her parents’ new companions; the happy
go-lucky hunky bartender Lincoln (Alexander Skarsgård) and the “soon to be” ex-nanny
Margo (Joanna Vanderham). With the two of them taking over the responsibilities
of watching over Maisie, they begin to see how selfish and damaged Maisie’s
parents really are, and find themselves falling in love with one another.
Maisie sees how they each match far more than her own parents match them. In
Margo and Lincoln, Maisie finds the parenting, the love and the family she
craves.
Darkly comic and emotionally compelling, WHAT MAISIE KNEW is an
evocative portrayal of the chaos and complexity of modern relationships and the
meaning of family.

SHIP OF THESEUS by ANAND GANDHI |
|
|
[CITY TO CITY: Opening Film]
|
India, 2012, 139', Hindi, Drama
Cast: Aida El-Kashef, Soham Shah, Neeraj Kabi
|
|
Director Anand Gandhi poses an age old question, “If the parts of a ship
are replaced bit-by-bit, is it still the same ship? “
SHIP OF THESEUS explores the moral and ethical boundaries of human
existence as told through the stories of three disparate individuals – an
experimental photographer, an ailing monk, and a young stockbroker—all of whom
unknowingly have a connection. These three people manifest philosophical
dilemmas in their personal lives, but their narratives converge to reveal an
even larger fabric of connections, meaning, beauty, existence and death in a
delicately poetic finale.

|
China, 2012, 96', Mandarin, Drama
Cast: Duan Bowen, Lv Yulai, Shi Shi, Li Xinyun, Han Wenwen

From the eye and artistry of renowned, award-winning director Zhang Yuan
and calling to mind his classic film BEIJING BASTARDS from the early 1990’s, comes
BEIJING FLICKERS, an updated and new perspective on life in contemporary Beijing
where beneath the dazzling economic boom exists the downtrodden and forgotten
“little people” who bear the weight of life’s trials and tribulations. Beijing has transformed itself into one of the world’s huge
and chaotic mega-cities; in this bubbling and exciting cauldron, four unlikely
friends struggle with their own life predicaments sometimes lifted up and sometimes
beaten down by the glamorous, modern, and prosperous city of Beijing. They may not have much, but at least they
have each other.
