The Cannes Competition title, written and directed by Sergei Loznitsa, is a parable about contemporary life in Russia. It tells the story of an ill-fated truckdriver, Georgy, who takes a wrong turn on a highway and loses his way in the wilderness of the Russian countryside. In trying to find his way back to civilization, Georgy encounters a number of local inhabitants – a heart-broken war veteran, an aggressive teenage prostitute, corrupt police officers and a mysterious Gypsy woman. It becomes a trip where brutal force and survival instincts overcome humanity and common sense as Georgy unwittingly heads towards a dead end.
