IDFA PLAY COMPETITION FOR MUSIC DOCUMENTARY
EL GUSTO
by SAFINEZ BOUSBIA
Also Screen in DOC FOR SALES

France / UAE / Ireland / Algeria, 2011, 88', French/Arabic, Documentary

The film tells the story of a journey that started in a small mirror shop during Bousbia’s visit to Algiers in 2003. Intrigued by some old photographs of a music class from the 1940s, she set out to track down these lost friends, now aged between 70 and 100 and living across Algeria and France. Five decades after their first lessons at the Conservatory of Algiers under the legendary master El Hadj M’Hamed El Anka, the members of El Gusto now recount the country’s turbulent history and their undying passion for “CHABBI”  –a rhythmic and unique cocktail of Andalusian, Berber, Arabic and Flamenco music traditions. Chabbi was the homegrown music of the AlgerianCasbah; the music of the streets, the coffee shops and weddings that united  (and defied) religion, class, and ethnicity.

BY ALEX STAPLETON

USA, 2011, 95’ English, Documentary
Featuring: Roger Corman, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese

CORMAN'S WORLD: EXPLOITS OF A HOLLYWOOD REBEL tracks the triumphant rise of Hollywood's most prolific writer-director producer, the true "godfather" of independent filmmaking. While known for working fast and wallowing in the cult movie world of monsters, bad special effects, schlocky acting, and plentiful nudity, Corman is also a respected rebel of cinema. And he taught the next generation of film greats, including Scorsese, Demme, Coppola, Cameron, even Ron Howard. From Corman's first feature in 1955 to the set of his new film, DINOSHARK, this entertaining documentary has all the blood and guts of Corman's lurid and fascinating career, with essential insights from contemporaries and students. Learn the roots of indie filmmaking, laced with boobs, violence, guns and creatures!

BY ALEX GIBNEY and ALISON ELLWOOD

USA, 2011, 90', Color & B/W, English, Documentary

Ever wonder what it's like to drop acid? Look no further. In 1964, Ken Kesey, celebrated author of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, took a mythic excursion across America from the West to the East Coast. Fueled by massive doses of LSD, Kesey and his band of Merry Pranksters embarked on the ultimate road trip. Their destination: Tomorrowland at the New York World's Fair. Forty-plus years later, Academy Award–winning filmmaker Alex Gibney (TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE) and codirector Alison Ellwood unearthed Kesey's footage, audio recordings, and photographs and created a fully immersive cinematic experience. This Magic Trip is guaranteed to blow your mind.
