Franz Liszt in Istanbul Music in Words: The Kreutzer Sonata Towards the end of his long and incredibly performance career, Franz Liszt finally managed to visit the Ottoman Empire in 1847. Liszt had wanted to visit Istanbul as early as 1838, and wrote to a friend, “… [I have a] desire and strong decision to go to Istanbul...” Published in 1889, The Kreutzer Sonata is a novella by Leo Tolstoy, named after Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata for violin and piano, Op. 47.
