《圓 · 規》徐晨陽油畫 – 影
 

 如果我們按照傳統油畫語言的習慣來閱讀,會覺得徐晨陽的作品不夠流暢,有許多間斷和休止,從而給人一種生澀和粗糲的感覺,不如古典油畫語言那麼細膩和微妙。但是,從跨文化美學的角度來看,這正是徐晨陽所追求的獨特趣味的體現,而且這種趣味與中國傳統美學有著淵源關係。

 中國美學在流暢、雋永之外,還推崇粗澀和古拙。這種粗澀、古拙和斑駁之美,因為時間的沉澱更容易讓人產生無限的想像、眷戀和憂思。特別是對於具有悠久歷史的中國人來說,橫貫古往來今的憂思,是一種十分高級的情感。同時,粗澀和斑駁的藝術語言,還會因為沉穩、厚重、深邃而給人一種可以充分信賴的感覺,一種類似於海德格爾所說的“大地”的感覺。

 跟這個安靜的人在一起,他就是一面鏡子,他的畫跟別的畫家的畫在一起就是一面鏡子,他的繪畫是品質很高的繪畫。當然像他這樣的人不多,所以晨陽有的時候顯得孤獨,因為人們都喜歡熱鬧。喜歡獨行、沉靜的人畢竟是少數。但是他的繪畫是有分量的。
 
 有時候看徐晨陽的繪畫,會想到季大純,大家可能忘記這個人,但我忘不了,他畫得就是好,就是安逸,不愛出頭露面。這樣的畫是我們藝術界也是藝術家的一個鏡子。他們的存在提醒我們在掌握總體特徵、時代特徵、地域特徵或者是群體特徵的時候,不要忘了還有另一些重要的形態。評論家是善於歸納和總結的,實際上藝術是最難歸納和總結的,尤其是對藝術家的創作實踐來講。有一些我們總結不到,沒法納入我們的大框架和體系裡。但不意味著他的畫不重要、沒有學術價值,完全不能這麼講。在今天這個時代,像徐晨陽,季大純、這些人都是非常重要的藝術家。我覺得他的特點是非常鮮明和有價值的。

《Circle · Rules》Xu Chenyang's Oil Painting – Shadow Series

 If we read Xu Chenyang’s paintings with the mindset of reading traditional oil paintings, we might feel that Xu’s brushworks are not smooth enough. His brushworks reveal a sense of roughness and may not be as delicate and subtle as the classical oil paintings. However, from the perspective of cross-cultural aesthetics, it shows the embodiment of the unique feature pursued by Xu, and such feature actually originated from traditional Chinese aesthetics.
 
 Chinese aesthetics is not only characterised by its fluency and timeless, it also respects roughness and quaintness. The kind of roughness, quaintness and mottled beauty, are more likely to create unlimited imagination, attachment and sorrow as time passes. With a long history, the sorrow of the past and the present is a very high-level emotion for Chinese. At the same time, the roughness and mottled artistic language gives a feeling of reliability with its steadiness and deepness features. It is similar to the feeling of “earth” mentioned by Heidegger.

 When you are with Xu Chenyang, a quiet person, he becomes your mirror. Xu’s paintings are mirrors in front of paintings of other artists. His paintings are of high quality and unique. Xu seems to be lonely sometimes, because most people are living and working in a bustling world. After all, people who like to be alone and quiet are minority. However, Xu’s paintings are weighty.
 
 Sometimes when I look at Xu’s paintings, I think of Ji Dachun. You may forget this person, but I can't forget that he painted well, lived with ease and did not love to show off. Such paintings are mirrors in our art world which allow artists to reflect on themselves. The existence of these paintings reminds us that when we master the paintings’ overall characteristics, characteristics of time, characteristics of geographical features or characteristics of the groups, we should not forget that there are other important forms and elements. Critics are good at summarising and making conclusion. In fact, art is most difficult to summarise and conclude, especially on artists’ creative practice. We may not able to make a conclusion for some artists’ work or to include their work in our current framework and system, but it does not mean that their paintings are not important or with no academic value. Today, artists like Xu Chenyang and Ji Dachun are outstanding artists. Their paintings are vivid and valuable.
