Reconnection with Hong Kong” – A contemporary art exhibition by Chinese artists with overseas background

From 14 to 18 July 2010, the Art Of Nature International Company Limited collaborated with the Hong Kong Oil Painting Research Society to organize a joint exhibition called “An Oriental Art Of Nature, A Reconnection With Hong Kong” at Lower Block Exhibition Hall, Hong Kong City Hall. This exhibition enabled a group of distinguished artists, either from China and Overseas, to showcase their ingenious art talents.

During the Opening Ceremony, distinguished leaders from political, academic and commercial field made their honorable presence as a tremendous support to this splendid art event. The Guests-of-Honor included Prof. Vincent Tong Kam-tang, Head of Graduate Division of Fine Arts, Department of Fine Arts, The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Prof. Ambrose King Yeo-chi, Former President of Emeritus Scholar of Sociology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Ms. Mi Jihong, Deputy Inspector & Director of Publicity, Cultural & Sports Affairs, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR; Mr. Christopher Chung, Chairman of Art Promotion Committee, Hong Kong Arts Development Council; Dr. Jose Sunsay Yu (G.B.S., S.B.S., J.P.) and so forth. They consistently acknowledged our participating artists, for their sincerity to reward our society with their overseas scholastic achievements. On the other hand, the Academic Forum called “The Positioning, Development & Prospect of Chinese Fine Arts in Contemporary Era” on 16 July enabled our participating artists to exchange views with Prof. Vincent Tong Kam-tang, from CUHK Department of Fine Arts; Mr. Shaw Tze, Sophisticated Professional in Literary and Publication Affairs, Prof. Lin Mingchen, and other distinguished artists or painters. Both the guest-speakers and the attendants shared the similar vision of assessing the problems, confusions and risks that the Hong Kong oil-painting circuit encountered under the cultural strike of modern-contemporary globalization.

“An Oriental Art Of Nature, A Reconnection With Hong Kong” displayed 120 pieces of naturalistic oil paintings, Chinese paintings and sculptures. From the “European View Series” and “Hong Kong View Series” by Lin Minggang, “Tibetan Series” by Wang Shouqing, “Lotus Series” by Xu Enqi and “Yuen Long Series” by Lin Mingchen, you could discover that, these participating artists advocated a development of inspirations based on their spiritual inclinations, so as to fulfill the nourishment of life and the comprehension of virtues. Lin Minggang, Wang Shouqing, Chu Tat-shing, Yu Shan, Yang Kai, Xu Enqi, Lin Mingchen, Lu Weihua, Rona Hu and other participating artists are a group of distinguished overseas-Chinese artists from France, Belgium, the United States and so forth. They were equipped with fruitful life inspirations and long-term creative experiences. Some of them were very famous in overseas, and obtained a particular level of artistic achievements. Most of them were found with unique art styles. The aesthetic qualities of art pieces corresponded to artists’ personality and behavioral cultivation. Lin Minggang, Chairman of Hong Kong Oil Painting Research Society, indicated that, there had been a perspective called “morality from literary pursuit” in Chinese traditional culture. A request for self-perfection was a wholesome behavior cherished by traditional Chinese intellectuals. In Lin Minggang’s speech, he quoted Master Leo Tolstoy’s statement – “A genuine art piece is a kind of sentimental expression from artists’ innermost beings, similar to a crystallized product being fostered by a mother’s pregnancy.” Lin further justified that, based on the Chinese traditional values; we could apply the moral demands of “gentleness”, “conscientiousness”, “devotedness”, “courtesy”, “selflessness”, “politeness”, “righteousness”, “incorruptions” and “shamefulness” to check whether a particular art piece was either “inferior” or “immortal”. And such aesthetic principles could be used to construct a harmonious relationship with public audiences and our society.

Ms. Cissy Cheung, President and Curator of the Art Of Nature International Company Limited, felt optimistic with the prospect for Hong Kong to promote contemporary Chinese art. She stated that, culture and art, being an inevitable source of food nourishments in the realm of humanity, are believed to be the most potential category of industry apart from finance and properties. Its realm for development is immense. Cissy Cheung reiterated that, Hong Kong is an international metropolitan with prosperous development in finance, properties and commerce. She comprised the most liberated port for import and export trade, the most premium system for taxation and customs, the most profound judiciary system, the freest monetary flow, and the safest entrepreneurial environment. Also, there is a group of diligent and talented Chinese artists, who were well educated with both Chinese and Eurocentric knowledge. These criterias provide the most solid foundation and the most quality space for the survival of culture and art.

Several oil paintings by Lin Minggang have been subscribed by some enthusiastic art collectors. Amongst, the greatest piece by Lin Minggang called “Night in Hong Kong” will be permanently collected by the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in HKSAR. In the future, the Art Of Nature International Company Limited will continuously devote more energy and financial resources to push forward the cultural and art industry of China and Hong Kong. In the upcoming September, our fine arts will appear in Shanghai Art Expo. Look forward to your tremendous supports!
