This November ALTFIELD GALLERY is presenting an exhibition of  fine works of art from Japan. Included in the show areoutstanding pieces very rare to find, such as traditional Japanese Habachi with gold decoration, fantastic Bento lunch boxes, beautiful lacquer Hokkai boxes and display stands, which are ideal for eye-catching interior décor, entertaining and are highly cherished by collectors.
Of particular interest is a fine collection of wood lacquer Habachi sourced from a private Japanese collector, which shows many of the special techniques of the fine workmanship of the Edo period craftsmen such as inlaid motif, silver, gold dust lacquer.

One of the finest pieces is a spectacular six- panel Rimpa floral screen, dating to early 19th Century. It epitomizes the decorative ideals of the Rimpa School – emphasizing the arrangement of natural forms into a somewhat abstract visual display. Fields of flowering chrysanthemums, a myriad of varieties, appear amongst billowing clouds of gold. Rimpa School represents the highest standard of decorative painting of all schools of Japanese painting. The flowers are raised by the use of Gofun (Oyster Shell Lacquer). This masterpiece features wonderful color with gilding and silver leaf.

We look forward to welcoming you to the gallery to see the remarkable collection.
