The domaine-bottled Fevre 2008 Chablis adds chicken stock, fusil crushed stone, and shrimp shell
dimensions (even in the nose) to the simpler chalk and salt that dominated their Champ Royaux and
Petit Chablis cuvees. Tart yet lusciously refreshing white currant and grapefruit offer the perfect stage
for the wine’s complex mineral show, and there is a back-end grip and energy here that are admirable
for a wine of village origin. Like all of the wines in this year’s Fevre collection, it has undeniably high
acid, and the degree of buffering here is not comparable to that in the estate’s premier crus, so this
wine will strike some tasters as somewhat severe.

Santa Alicia’s 2006 Millantu is made up of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Cabernet Franc, and 18%
Carmenere. A glass-coating opaque purple, it gives up a reticent nose of cedar, spice box, cinnamon,
sage, violets, blackcurrant, and blueberry. Round, ripe, and surprisingly forward, this is an elegant effort
that can be enjoyed now but can be cellared for several years.

Cotarella's flagship wine, his 100% Merlot called Montiano, is aged in 100% new oak casks for 12 months,
and bottled with neither fining nor filtration. The terrific opaque purple-colored 1998 Montiano exhibits a
spectacular bouquet of black cherry liqueur, licorice, and toasty vanillin. The wine explodes on the palate,
offering copious quantities of glycerin, cassis, black cherries, and blackberries. As it sits in the glass,
aromas and flavors of melted chocolate and toasty oak emerge. The finish lasts for 40+ seconds. This
1998 should drink well for 10-15 years. Bravo! (Drink Now to 2015).

A spectacular effort, the 2002 Shiraz The Octavius (100% old vine Shiraz aged 22 months in both
French and American wood) is a noteworthy successor to the phenomenal 2001 released last year.
Aromas of figs, chocolate, blackberry and cassis liqueur, roasted meats, and barbecue spice emerge
from this hugely extracted, full-bodied monster. Reminiscent of some Grange Hermitage cuvees from
the early seventies, it is a wine of supreme quality, with a singular personality as well as 20-25 years
of aging potential.
